3 | Leiria, 19/02/2009 MMP for scanned compound documents encoding  MMP proved to be a versatile algorithm, with competitive results both for smooth, text and compound images;  This versatility makes MMP an excellent candidate to compress scanned compound document, specially in particularly dificult situations, when all the other algorithms fail;  A specifically oriented optimization of MMP, both for smooth and non- smooth regions encoding, allied to a segmentation algorithm, can make MMP competitive with state-of-the-art compound document encoders;  The adaptivity of MMP could be a decisive factor to add robustness for particularly difficult cases. 4 | Leiria, 19/02/2009 MMP for Natural Images Coding – MMP-FP  Experimental results shown that the direction in which square blocks are segmented is important in the algorithm efficiency; Vertical segmentationHorizontal segmentation  The best segmentation direction is dependent of the structure present in the input image;  The possibility to choose at each point for the direction that minimises the representation cost of the block should be an advantage. 8 | Leiria, 19/02/2009 MMP for non-smooth images coding – MMP-text  Successive optimizations of MMP were oriented to increase the algorithm’s performance for smooth images compression;  Performance increase for text images compression was a colateral effect of the algorithm’s evolution;  The development of an hydrid encoder allows an independent optimization of the encoder focused on the text component, and another one to the smooth component;  This motivated a study focused in the influence of each of the technics introduced in MMP for text images compression.
