Attendance Why it matters!

Why is it important to have good attendance at school? You can access all your learning and homework You can stay on track and don’t need to catch up on any work missed or fall behind You can be a positive member of a team and not let anyone down because you’re not there You can get better KS3, 4 & 5 results

Why is it important to have good attendance at work? Good attendance at school means you can get a good reference so you have more chance of getting the job you want Helps you get promoted as you get recognised as being reliable Helps you earn more money in bonuses, commission or tips Helps avoid stress as you can stay on top of your workload

These are just some examples… Can you think of any others?

Think about your attendance for the last 6 weeks… …has it gone up, down or stayed the same?

Why? You may have been in every day in the last 6 weeks so your attendance has improved There may be a very good reason that your attendance has gone down: maybe you’ve had a medical appointment. There may be a poor reason that your attendance has gone down: maybe you felt a little unwell, but could have come into school

So what now? Your tutors will be working in tutor time with you, to discuss attendance individually. Let’s have a look at what your attendance figures mean…

Good attendance 96 – 100%

95% attendance = 10 days off in the year. That’s 2 weeks of school Which = 55 hours of lessons

90% attendance = 20 days off in the year That’s 4 weeks of school Which = 110 hours of lessons!

85% attendance = 30 days off in the year That’s 6 weeks of school Which = 165 hours of lessons!

80% attendance = 40 days off in the year That’s 8 weeks of school Which = 220 hours of lessons!

So you can see… This will have a major impact on your results!

Research suggests that 17 missed school days a year = 1 whole GCSE grade DROP in achievement. (DfES) The greater the attendance the greater the achievement.

And grades mean money!!!! If you get 5 A grades at GCSE you will earn on average £350,000 more money in a lifetime than someone who got 5 C grades!

So have a think… What target do you need to give yourself for the next 3-4 weeks and why?
