Grammar Homographs/Homonyms & Homophones Goal for Lesson 10: You will learn the difference between words that sound the same but have different spellings & meanings. You will identify homographs & homophones.

Homographs or Homonyms: A word or a group of words Grammar Homographs or Homonyms: A word or a group of words that share the same spelling but have different meanings. e.g., right(the right side) and right(correct).

Homonyms/Homographs: Grammar Homonyms/Homographs: Words that sound the same & are spelled the same but have have different meanings. Example: lead (the metal) and lead (verb).

Homographs/homonyms can have the same or different pronunciations, Grammar Homographs/homonyms can have the same or different pronunciations, e.g., well (adjective, to be healthy) well (noun, a spring or natural Source of water) lead (noun, the metal) lead (verb, to take charge). Review the words to discuss meaning. Move to next slide putting them into context. When do you know which meaning is the correct one?

When you don’t know what the words mean in the context of the passage, you will need to look it up in the dictionary.

Examples: Ant (noun)/ aunt (noun) bare (adjective)/ bear (noun). Look for the general meaning for each message? What are the passages saying? Are the main ideas the same? Are the details that support the main ideas different or similar?
