The Serpent Confrontation

NIV Exodus 4:1-4 Moses answered, "What if they do not believe me or listen a to me and say, 'The LORD did not appear to you'?" 2 Then the LORD said to him, "What is that in your hand?" "A staff," a he replied. 3 The LORD said, "Throw it on the ground." Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, a and he ran from it. 4 Then the LORD said to him, "Reach out your hand and take it by the tail." So Moses reached out and took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staff in his hand. (Exo 4:1-4 NIV)

Exodus 7: The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 9 "When Pharaoh says to you, 'Perform a miracle, a ' then say to Aaron, 'Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,' and it will become a snake." b 10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake.

Exodus 7: Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers, a and the Egyptian magicians b also did the same things by their secret arts: c 12 Each one threw down his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs. 13 Yet Pharaoh's heart a became hard and he would not listen b to them, just as the LORD had said.

Exodus 7: Then the LORD said to Moses, "Pharaoh's heart is unyielding; a he refuses to let the people go. (Exo 7:8-14 NIV)

The Serpent Confrontation

AARON’S ROD AND THE MAGICIANS’ EX. 7:6-13 The serpent confrontation

AARON’S ROD & THE MAGICIANS’ EX. 7:6-13 foreshadows the Lord’s humiliation of Egypt through the Plagues at the Red Sea. The Serpent “swallowed” the magicians’ serpents in 7:12 The Lord had used the Red Sea to “swallow” the Egyptian army 15:12

SERPENTS IN EGYPTIAN CIVILIZATION

“In the year one of his coronation as king— his majesty saw a dream by night: two serpents, one upon his right, the other upon his left. Then his majesty awoke and found them not. His Majesty said: “Wherefore has this come to me?” Then they (The two goddesses) answered him, saying: “Thine is the southland; take for thyself (also) the northland. The two goddesses (Wadjet and Nekhbat) shine upon thy brow, the land is given to thee, in its length and its breadth. No other divides it with thee.” (Stele of Tanutamon Dynasty 25)

“The Kas of Unas are behind him; His Hemsut are under his feet; His gods are over him; His uraeus- serpents are over his head. The leading snake of Unas is at his forehead, She who perceives the soul (of the enemy), She who excels in the force of fire.” (Pyramid Text 396).

““O Red Crown, O Inu, O great One, O Magician, O Fiery Snake! Let there be terror of me like the terror of thee. Let there be fear of me like the fear of thee. Let there be awe of me like the awe of thee. Let me rule a leader of the living. Let me be powerful, a leader of spirits. (Pyramid Text )

GOD VS THE gods OF EGYPT

Golden Serpent

(Num 21:8-9 ESV) 8 And the LORD said to Moses, "Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live." 9 So Moses made a bronze 1 serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

(Joh 3:14-15 NIV) 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.
