 The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet protocol suite to serve billions of users worldwide.  It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, of local to global scope, that are linked by a broad array of electronic and optical networking technologies.

 The origins of the Internet reach back to the 1960s with both private and United States military research into robust, fault-tolerant, and distributed computer networks.  The USSR launch of Sputnik spurred the United States to create the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA or DARPA) in February 1958 to regain a technological lead.  Although the basic applications and guidelines that make the Internet possible had existed for almost two decades, the network did not gain a public face until the 1990s.

 The Internet is allowing greater flexibility in working hours and location, especially with the spread of unmetered high-speed connections and web applications.  The internet can be use for people to keep in contact with each other threw s, blogs, twitter, and facebook.

 , is a method of exchanging digital messages across the Internet or other computer networks.  Originally, was transmitted directly from one user to another computer.  can be used in school by teachers to keep on the same page as other teachers or for teachers to parents on certain issues.

 A blog is a type of website or part of a website.  Blogs are usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video.  Blogs can be used by teachers to post readings for students to read and leave comments or reflections.

 Twitter is a website, owned and operated by Twitter Inc., which offers a social networking and micro blogging service, enabling its users to send and read other users' messages called tweets.  Twitter can help students fallow head figures including the president.  Tweets are publicly visible by default, however senders can restrict message delivery to their friends list. Users may subscribe to other users' tweets—this is known as following and subscribers are known as followers.

 Facebook is a social network service and website launched in February 2004 that is operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc.  As of July 2010 Facebook has more than 500 million active users.  Facebook and help people stay in contact with people and create events sent to a large group of people.

 Asynchronous Communication – Occurs at random times and all participants do not have to be at a computer at the same time to communicate. is an example of this.  Synchronous Communication – Occurs with all participants communicating on the web at the same time. Chatrooms and Instant Messaging are examples of synchronous communication.

 Social Bookmarking  Podcasts  Photo-Sharing  Video Sharing **Educators use these resources on the web all the time to post information that is available for learners to view and use
