GET THE MONKEYS OFF YOUR BACK! Each of the things you need to do is like a big, hairy, squawking, stinky monkey on your back, weighing you down with stress until the job is done! THE FIREMAN: REACTING! THE ACTOR: PRETENDING! THE DENIER: AVOIDING! THE TIME MASTER!

NO MORE MONKEYS ! HOW TO BE THE TIME MASTER! M.E. McWilliams, AARC 2012

M.E. McWilliams, AARC Director I was once you! Partying! Napping! Studying... Between 12 and 2 am! I couldn’t understand why I wasn’t making good grades! I HAD TO START MAKING SOME CHOICES ABOUT HOW I SPENT MY TIME! 1980

TIME MANAGEMENT MATTERS ! The way we approach our time is habitual. Changing those habits is like making the river run backwards! You don’t magically become Mr. or Mrs. On- Top-Of-Things when you graduate. Habits are hard to break.

WHAT I KNOW ABOUT WHAT IT TAKES  GET THE MONKEYS IN YOUR FACE!  DO THE BIG MONKEY FIRST!  EAT THE BIG APE ONE BITE AT A TIME!  SAY NO TO SOME MONKEYS! For this workshop you will need:  A phone or  Planner

GET IT THE MONKEYS IN YOUR FACE! MOBILE: 1. FIXED APPOINTMENTS AND DUE DATES Like a class or an SI Group or your mom’s birthday! Calendar with alarm 2. THINGS TO DO without certain date and time Dump list: everything you need to do in the near future: Like renew car registration. Now List: 5-7 small things to do now: Like pay tuition installment

DO IT NOW! FIXED APPOINTMENTS/DUE DATES

DO IT NOW! THE LISTS DUMP LISTNOW LIST

DO THE BIG MONKEY FIRST! Do the thing you dread FIRST! And the dread will go away. Learn to work in a bad mood: One must be pitiless about this matter of “mood.” In a sense, the writing will create the mood..... I have forced myself to begin writing when I’ve been utterly exhausted, when I’ve felt my soul as thin as a playing card, when nothing has seemed worth enduring for another five minutes... and somehow the activity of writing changes everything. Joyce Carol Oates

DO IT NOW! THE ORDER So now figure out which thing you should do FIRST on the now list:  The most urgent  The one due the soonest  THE BIG MONKEY Now get up and do that thing like your pants were on fire!

EAT THE BIG APE— ONE BITE AT A TIME! Complete rewrite of intro 30 minutes brainstorming cra Ask prof some questions Half a draft submitted to OWL Read paper out loud Break your terrible, horrible big monkey into small bites. Take one small bite, and then another small bite, and so on.

DO IT NOW! REWRITE YOUR LIST Make the task smaller:  Math Homework  Read History  Study Botany

SAY NO TO SOME MONKEYS! There are only 168 hours in a week. You can’t save time. You can’t make more time. You can’t do it all! Something has to go— Take your pick! Do you know the difference between Have To’s and Want To’s?

DO IT NOW! THE FOCUS MY DO NOT DO LIST  Talk on the phone to anyone except my kids  Regularly have lunch with friends  Have cable  Start playing addictive games  Join organizations  Shop as a hobby  Watch a lot of movies
