Stewardship

Stewardship?

Genesis Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth." So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth" (Gen. 1:26-28).

Genesis “God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them: Be fertile and multiply and fill the earth. Fear and dread of you shall come upon all the animals of the earth and birds of the air, upon all the creatures that move about on the ground and all the fishes of the sea; into your power they are delivered. Any living creature that moves about shall be yours to eat; I give them all to you as I did the green plant.” (Genesis 9: 1-3)

Old Testament  “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” (Psalm 24:1) “To the Lord your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it.” (Deuteronomy 10:14) “The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you are but aliens and my tenants.” (Leviticus 25:23) “Who has a claim against me that I must pay? Everything under heaven belongs to me.” (Job 41:11)

New Testament Talents (Matthew 25: 14-30) Pounds (Luke 19: 11-27).

Universal Destination of Goods God created the earth and its resources for the benefit of all humanity. We are not ultimately the owners of anything, but required to be good stewards Not contrary to personal ownership, private property – But they are not absolute Larger social function to contribute to authentic development

In context of other Principles Human Dignity Most God-like when we ‘co-create’ Participation and Association Partake – Contribute to God’s creation Solidarity ‘Walk with’ others, in the environment Subsidiarity ‘Co-create’ at the appropriate levels The common good Conditions necessary for people to thrive Caring for those who are poor Stewardship for those left out

Encyclicals Early Encyclicals Pope Paul VI: Pope Paul II: 1965, Joy and Hope 1967, On the Development of Peoples 1971, A Call to Action 1971, Justice in the World Pope Paul II: 1988, The Social Concerns of the Church 1991, One Hundred Years

Pope Benedict VI – Charity In Truth Let us hope that the international community and individual governments will succeed in countering harmful ways of treating the environment…One of the greatest challenges facing the economy is to achieve the most efficient use – not abuse – of natural resources, based on a realization that the notion of ‘efficiency’ is not value-free.

Pope Francis – Apostolic Exhortation There are other weak and defenseless beings who are frequently at the mercy of economic interests or indiscriminate exploitation. I am speaking of creation as a whole. We human beings are not only the beneficiaries but also the stewards of other creatures. Thanks to our bodies, God has joined us so closely to the world around us that we can feel the desertification of the soil almost as a physical ailment, and the extinction of a species as a painful disfigurement. Let us not leave in our wake a swath of destruction and death which will affect our own lives and those of future generations.
