We are sometimes not the good friends we might wish to be: Blinded by our wishes, likes & dislikes Unable to see wishes & needs of our friends We don’t stop to think how our actions will affect others
We need habits of friendship Actions that strengthen our friendship We need to become virtuous
Virtues Habits that help us to choose what is good, Even without stopping to think Help to: Take control of our lives Channel our emotions to stop us from doing something we’d regret
Virtues are developed Education Prayer Practice
Being poor in spirit Ok with who they are, don’t need to put on an act People like to be around them Admit weaknesses & strengths Admit need for God & others Can admire others without being jealous
Those who are meek Don’t try to get their own way using verbal, physical, emotional violence Don’t make others feel stupid Don’t push others around Don’t need to manipulate others
Blessed are those who mourn When bad things are happening to others, it’s ok to be sad If you aren’t, then you’re self-centred, selfish & not much of a friend Are you benefitting from their pain?
Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy The merciful: Give others a 2nd chance Forgive others
Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God Those pure in heart: Are our friends all the time, Are committed to us
Blessed are the peacemakers They shall be called sons & daughters of God Peacemakers: Help us to “patch things up”
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake For theirs is the kingdom of heaven These people are: Okay with who they are & are not afraid of sticking up for what is right, even if it isn’t easy.
The Beatitudes Matt. 5:3-10 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteous, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons & daughters of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Beatitude Means “blessing” or “promise of true happiness” Biblical beatitudes: Directions for life O.T., statements of popular wisdom e.g., “Find wisdom & you’ll find happiness (Pr. 3.13)
Jesus’ Beatitudes Are different Give directions along paths we would not normally expect to find happiness Lead us to happiness of true & lasting friendship with others & God
