The Final Battle Semester 1 Review Beowulf The Final Battle Semester 1 Review

The Final Battle continued What is Beowulf’s final battle? Beowulf must fight a dragon who is laying waste to the Geats’ land. The dragon is angry because a thief has stolen a jeweled cup from the dragon’s hoard of gold.

The Final Battle continued Why are the odds against him? If the odds are against him, why does he keep fighting? Beowulf is an old man now and is fighting a dragon with burning hot breath and a tongue which pours with poison. The fates are also against him. Beowulf fights the dragon against all odds because no other man could do what he meant to do – kill the dragon.

The Final Battle continued Why is the dragon angry? The dragon is angry because a thief stole a golden cup and a man dares to come to his lair.

The Final Battle continued What are Beowulf’s last wishes? What do Beowulf’s followers do after his death? Beowulf’s last wishes are that his brave Geats build him a tomb, at the water’s edge, high on “this spit of land,” so sailors can see the tower and remember Beowulf’s name and call it Beowulf’s tower. After Beowulf dies, twelve of the bravest Geats rode their horses around the tower, telling their sorrow, telling stories of their dead king and his greatness, his glory, praising him for heroic deeds, for a life as noble as his name. They mourned and praised Beowulf.

The Final Battle continued Why is Beowulf’s quest for fame not considered a flaw in his character? The Anglo-Saxons believed that fame acquired in the service of good or through loyalty to a leader was an honorable quest.
