John 8:12 Pastor Keone

John 8:12 12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

“I am the light of the world.” * John 8:13 13 The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid." * John 8:28 28 So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am the one I claim to be and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.

Testing the validity of Jesus claim (vv ) * Romans 1:3-4 3 regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, 4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. * 1 Corinthians 15:3-7 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; 7 then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles;

“Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness…” * John 8: To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." Two fold thrust: * Followership * Freedom

“Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness…” * John 8: They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" 34 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. Freedom from sin allows one to have a permanent place in the family of God.

“Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness…” * John 8:42 42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. * John 8:47 47 He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God." Followership: Who we love and obey shows who we follow.

“…but will have the light of life.” * John 8:51 51 I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death. * John 8:56 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad. Instead of the gloom of hopelessness and sorrow associated with darkness, there will be an air of hope, rejoicing and gladness.

Matthew 5: "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
