Dealing with the Deep Proverbs 4:23 Our past plays a huge part in our present situation. Many of us have allowed things that have gone on in the past to shape and mold who we are and what we have in the present. You have to own it to disown it.

Proverbs 4:23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.

Dealing with Sin You can’t change that you’ve done it, but you can change who owns it.

Dealing with Sin You can’t change that you’ve done it, but you can change who owns it. Throw off Hebrews 12:1 Put to death Colossians 3:5-7 Get rid of Colossians 3:8-10

Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

Colossians 3:5-7 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.

Colossians 3:8-10 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.

Colossians 3:8-10 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

Dealing with Offenses and Violations “Not forgiving is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” Who gets locked up? Matthew 18:21-35

Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.

Matthew 18:21-35 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him.

Matthew 18:21-35 “Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt. The servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’

Matthew 18:21-35 “The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go. But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him and began to choke him.

Matthew 18:21-35 “’Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded. His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’ But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt.

Matthew 18:21-35 “When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened. Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said,

Matthew 18:21-35 “’I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.

Matthew 18:21-35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart.”

Dealing with Offenses and Violations “Not forgiving is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” 1.Acknowledge your pain and anger. Allow yourself to feel disrespected. 2.Be specific about your future expectations and limits. 3.Give up your right to “get even,” but insist on being treated better in the future.

Dealing with Offenses and Violations “Not forgiving is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” 4. Let go of blame, resentment, and negativity 5. Communicate your act of forgiveness. 6. Work toward reconciliation (when safe).

Dealing with Regrets You can’t change what you did or didn’t do but you can change from it.

Dealing with Regrets You can’t change what you did or didn’t do but you can change from it. Regret Reversal 2 Corinthians 7:10-11

Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm…

2 Corinthians 7:10-11 …what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.

Dealing with Regrets You can’t change what you did or didn’t do but you can change from it. 1. Admit what you did was wrong or hurtful. 2. Try to understand/empathize with the pain you have caused. 3. Take responsibility for your actions and make restitution if necessary.

Dealing with Regrets You can’t change what you did or didn’t do but you can change from it. 4. Assure that you will not do it again 5. Apologize and ask for forgiveness. 6. Forgive yourself.

Dealing with Bitterness Bitter – hard to bear; grievous; distressful Bitter to Sweet Exodus 15:22-27

Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water. When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter.

Exodus 15:22-27 (That is why the place is called Marah.) So the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?” Then Moses cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became sweet.

Exodus 15:22-27 There the LORD made a decree and a law for them, and there he tested them. He said, “If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees,…

Exodus 15:22-27 …I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you.” Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there near the water.
