Blues music What is the blues? The blues is a style of music which was created by African Americans. The time it was made was at the end of the 19th century. it is usually performed by one singer accompanied with a guitar. The lyrics are full on emotion and talk about sad things, such as loneliness, love, injustice and hopelessness. The African Americans wrote these songs to express their sorrow as they were taken as slaves.

slavery What did African Americans face? The African Americans were forced to come to North America as slaves. Most of the African Americans were from West Africa. They were sold from person to person until eventually to a white man who would take them as slaves. Almost half the people who were taken as slaves died of hunger and sickness while on the journey to North America. Many of the African Americans were separated from their families to become slaves. The ship they were on when travelling was crowded, stinky and unhygienic. The African Americans were not fed properly and were beaten. Some people were sent further north to pick up tobacco while others were sent to southern states to pick up cotton. During their time in slavery the African Americans sang music to drown their sorrow in, this type of music later became known as the blues.

The slaves freedom Did the African Americans finally get their freedom? They were set free in 1865.The freedom they were given wasn’t really freedom. They no longer had to be slaves but the “freedom” was worse then slavery. The African Americans were mistreated and were denied jobs from people meaning they had no source of income. This was because people were not happy with the fact that they had been set free . This meant they couldn’t afford a place to stay so many of them became homeless.
