Over the course of time, we’ve had many people come to America. Some of the first people were the Iroquois Indians. They lived here over a thousand years ago. They lived along the Hudson River through Lake Erie. They lived longhouses. Next page, longhouses

The Iroquois lived in what is called a longhouse. The men and women both helped to build the longhouses. The men cut poles and then pushed them into the ground and bent and tied them together at the top to create a frame. The women peeled pieces of bark. They used them a shingles to cover the frame. More poles had been cut to hold the shingles in place. A longhouse had no windows, but the Iroquois would cut holes in the roof for the smoke to escape from the fire pits that were indoors. The longhouses had plenty of space for clans. In the longhouses, there was a wide hallway down the center of the longhouses. About every 6 meters, two families shared a fire pit. They stored food, clothing, and bedding on a three level platform along the wall. The platform also provided a place to sleep of the bare ground.

The Iroquois main source of food was mad up of corn, squash, and beans. The men also hunted deer and other such game. The corn, squash, and beans were called “The Three Sisters”(a sister for each type of food).

Clothing was generally made of deerskins. Men wore deerskin shirts and pants, and women wore skirts, moccasins, and deerskin vests. In cold weather conditions, they wore leggings and tunics of sorts. To decorate their clothing with beads and feathers. They also wore necklaces of shell beads. Also, surprising as it might seem, they tattooed themselves with spiritual figure like the bear or turtle.

Games were often played in the time of the Iroquois. One game that they invented, lacrosse, is still played today. Other game include the bowl game. There would be six partially charred peach pits. Someone would shake all of them up and see what side they landed on. If five of the six pits were all on one side, the player scored one point and went again. First one to ten won.
