HOMO ERECTUS By Jimena, Rachel, Marcus, Brighton

Introduction Prepare to go back in time and learn about the life of Homo Erectus: how they survived, what they wore, how they used to live, and what they ate.

Clothing They had no clothing except for fur, but some groups had animal hide for clothing.(1)

Food They ate meat from many other animals, nuts, berries, shellfish, honey, bird eggs, and roots. If they didn’t have food, they chewed on bones for fun to get the bone marrow. Since they were the first ones to make fire, they could cook food their meat. They drank water from rivers or lakes. (2)

Looked Like They looked similar to Homo Sapiens. Their teeth were larger. Their brain was 800 – 500 cubic centimeters smaller than ours. They were shorter than us. (3)

Shelter For homes, they lived in caves. Another possible home was tree branches. (4)

Daily Life They were hunters and gatherers. The men hunted and the women gathered.(5)

Tools They used rocks for tools and to make fire. They used rocks to sharpen other rocks.(6)

Fire They were the first group to make fire; they made it by smashing rocks together until a spark was created. (7)

Religion and Ceremonies Since Homo Erectus were so involved in trying to survive, they had no religion, nor did they have ceremonies. (8)

Painting and Carving They did not paint or carve because they were too busy trying to survive. (9)

Dates and Place of Existence Homo Erectus lived in Africa and Asia over 400,000 years ago. (10)

Questions What did Homo Erectus ate? How many years ago did they live? Did they have fire, and if so, how did they make it? What did they wear? What did they look like?

Answers 1.They ate meat from many different animals, as well as nuts, berries, shellfish, honey, bird eggs, and roots. 2.They lived over 400,000 B.C. ago. 3.Yes, they were the first group to make fire, which they created by hitting stones together until a spark was created. 4.Only some of their groups had clothes, which was animal hide. 5.They looked similar to homo sapiens, but they were smaller.
