Introduction The Victorians lived over 150 years ago, in the time when Victoria was queen between 1837 and Life was very different for people in Victorian times. Read our presentation to find out more about different aspects of Victorian times.
School After 1880 children were made to go to school. The teachers wore top hats and a suit and a big dress. Helpers wore smart school clothes and the students wore ties. In school if you were naughty you would get punished by getting hit with a wooden stick called … THE CANE!
Family life Rich Victorian families had gas and electric lights that were very posh. The rich had lots of golden coins that they could by big houses with. The poor got all the jobs and rich stayed at home
Work Farming methods continued to Victorian times. Women could spin the raw cotton into thin threads. Men and boys worked whilst women and girls stayed looking after the house at home.
Clothes Rich women wore long skirts or dresses and also held a big fan that they shake The skirts went straight down so you wouldn’t be as cold in the winter.
School It was mostly poor children who went to school. In school children learnt how to write in copperplate writing
Work Irish men came to Britain to help build the railways. Farm work was very hard. Children had to work in mines.
Family life In Victorian times most people lived in the same house for their life. They had large houses. Poor got houses built for them.
Public health The streets were never ever cleaned so they smelt. People threw all their rubbish because there were only bins in their houses. They had a plank of wood with a hole in for their toilets that were never used!
