SHOULD SCHOOL UNIFORMS BE ABOLISHED? Students lose their individuality! My name is Tony Freedom and I have a teenage son. My boy is very unhappy because teachers won’t let him wear what whatever he wants. Don’t they have anything better to do? My boy has to wear the same grey trousers and white, grey, navy blue or black T- shirt I had to wear 30 years ago. The world has made progress. Why don’t schools abolish the school uniform and allow our children to show their personality through the clothes they wear? The utilization of school uniforms has been a subject of sizzling debate among parents and school authorities since long. Some dispute the advantages of school uniforms, while others consider that the shortcomings are far more abundant. Our newspaper has invited parents to express their views on school uniforms. In today’s issue we present the responses of two parents. THE LOCAL NEWS THE ISLAND’S FAVOURITE NEWSPAPER - Since 1989 ©Υπουργείο Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού

THE LOCAL NEWS SCHOOL UNIFORMS Keep the uniform! My name’s Margaret Tory. I’m 45 years old and I’m fed up with this discussion whether students should wear a uniform at school or not. My teenage daughter wears a pair of blue jeans and a white top to school and she’s very happy. A uniform is necessary if schools want to have disciplined students and not young models who worry more about their appearance than about learning and what is important for their future. I wore a uniform when I was a high school student. My uniform consisted of a knee- long grey skirt and a white blouse. The boys, I remember, wore grey trousers and a white shirt. We all had to wear white socks and flat black shoes. I wore my uniform with pride. I didn’t have to worry about looking poor because everybody had the same clothes on. I don’t understand all this talk about abolishing the school uniform so as to give children more freedom of choice. With immature teenagers you can imagine what will happen when they wake up and have their whole wardrobe to choose from. We’ll never make it to school in the morning. Keep the uniform! It’s a must. Date today 5/5/2011 This is what Margaret Tory, mother of a teenage girl told us. ©Υπουργείο Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού
