Endocrine System. Functions of the endocrine system Regulates the effects of hormones on the body functions. Controls growth, development metabolism and.
THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Made up of 8 glands located throughout the body. These glands make and release hormones. The hormones are chemical messengers.
Biological Basis of Human Behavior : Role of Nervous system and glandular system.

The Endocrine System. Endocrine System Made of Glands Which are Organs That make Hormones That control Activities of the body.
The Endocrine System. Function The endocrine system produces chemicals that control many of the body’s daily activities. The endocrine system also regulates.
Aim: How does the Endocrine System work in our body?
HOMEOSTASIS “Keeping The Status Quo”.  A set of processes used to maintain a balanced body environment  Blood pressure at 120/80  Body temperature.

Endocrine System. Principal characteristics of the endocrine system  Made up of endocrine glands that release chemical messengers called HORMONES right.
The Endocrine System. functions Controls body functions and helps maintain homeostasis by using hormones. hormone – chemical messenger made in one cell.
Endocrine System Remember: Your nervous system senses impulses over a system of wire-like neurons that carry messages from one cell to another The term.
Unit 2.3 Chemical Communication. 1.What is a hormone? Chemical (specifically a protein) secreted by an endocrine gland that signals a cell or an organ.

 Glands release products  Products (hormones) broadcast information throughout body  Slower response(than nervous system) but lasts longer.
 The endocrine system is made up of glands that release hormones into the blood.  Hormones are chemicals that deliver messages throughout the body.

The Endocrine System Broadcasting throughout the body!

PURPOSE of Endocrine System GLANDS RELEASE PRODUCTS (HORMONES) INTO BLOODSTREAM PRODUCTS (HORMONES) BROADCAST MESSAGES TO BODY LIKE A RADIO BROADCAST

GLANDS PRODUCE AND RELEASE SUBSTANCES OR SECRETIONS EXOCRINE GLANDS:EXOCRINE GLANDS: –SECRETE SUBSTANCES THROUGH DUCTS –EX: –EX: SWEAT AND TEARS ENDOCRINE GLANDS:ENDOCRINE GLANDS: –RELEASE SECRETIONS (HORMONES) DIRECTLY INTO BLOOD STREAM

HORMONES ACT AS THE BROADCASTERS BY FLOWING THROUGH BLOODSTREAM AFFECT ACTIVITY OF OTHER CELLS TARGET CELLS:TARGET CELLS: –CELLS THAT HAVE RECEPTORS FOR A PARTICULAR HORMONE –WHAT HAPPENS IF A TYPE OF CELL DOES NOT HAVE RECEPTORS?? CELL WILL NOT RESPOND TO THAT HORMONE!CELL WILL NOT RESPOND TO THAT HORMONE! –Ex. Testosterone will not affect heart cells, but adrenaline will SLOWER AND LONGER-LASTING THAN NERVE RESPONSES

CONTROL OF THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM FEEDBACK MECHANISMSREGULATED BY FEEDBACK MECHANISMS –EX: HEATING SYSTEMSHEATING SYSTEMS ROOM COOLS DOWN FURNACE KICKS ON ROOM WARMS UP FURNACE KICKS OFF

CONTROL OF ENDOCRINE CON’T ACTUAL EXAMPLES IN BODY: CONTROLLING METABOLISM –H–HOW DOES OUR BODY REGULATE CELL ACTIVITY? MAINTAINING WATER BALANCE –H–HOW DO WE KEEP FROM GETTING DEHYDRATED? USING THE SHEET I GAVE YOU AND YOUR TEXTBOOKS, FILL IN THE INFO ON THESE TWO FEEDBACK MECHANISMS!
