Ships and boats – SMM. Five larger ships, not counting Vasa. Close to 200 boats (leisure, naval, commercial) in the boat collection. Small number of ships on Bareboat Charter.

Historic ships in Sweden. Private owners. Non commercial organisations – mainly sailing ships. Commercial – steam, motor and sail. Museum ships – mixed collection.

SMM´s role. Supportive. ”K-märkning” (”Listed ships”) – recognition of important ships. Networks, forums. Preservation of our own ships and boats. Bare Boat Charter – ships on loan.

SMM- ship preservation. No “official” standard for ship preservation in Sweden. Available resources (funds, personnel) key factors. Committed to our own ships “forever”.

Ship preservation – problems SMM – Icebreaker Sankt Erik. First seagoing icebreaker in Sweden (1915). Large and complicated to maintain. Fantastic steam engines.

SMM – lightship Finngrundet. Early museum ship (1970). Relic of a bygone era.

SMM – minesweeper Bremön. Historic context- 2 nd World War. Fantastic condition.

SMM – missile ship Västervik. “Pawn from the Cold War”. Excellent condition. Frozen in time.

SMM – full rigger Jarramas. Last sailing ship built in Karlskrona. Important for the local community. Ongoing restoration project.

SMM – the restoration of Jarramas. Long term project. High standard of craftsmanship. No modernisation. Replace like with like as far as possible.

SMM – more about Jarramas. Restoring the ship is one thing, but how do you tell the story?

SMM -the future for historic ships. More focus on networks, Bareboat Charter and partnerships. Probably fewer ships within SMM.
