WHAT IS A FALLACY?  A fallacy is an error in reasoning.  It usually lacks evidence and makes erroneous claims.

Fallacious Reasoning – Conclusion that does not make sense

FALLACIOUS REASONING  Premise 1: Most American cats are domestic house cats. Premise 2: Bill is an American cat. Conclusion: Bill is a domestic house cat

ANOTHER EXAMPLE  John is tall.  All tall boys are good at basketball.  John is good at basketball.

There are different types of reasoning

1. Factual Error – incorrect evidence

FACTUAL ERROR  The United States is in Africa.  Los Angeles is the capital of California.  Mrs. Costa is President of the United States.

2. Inductive Reasoning – goes from specific to general

INDUCTIVE FALLACY  Just arriving in California, I saw a white dog.  All dogs in California are white.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE  I encountered a rude person in New York City.  All people in New York City are rude.

3. Deductive Reasoning – Starts with a general assumption to specific

DEDUCTIVE FALLACY  If Chino is the capital of California, and it’s in California.  Chino is the capital of California.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE  If drinking milk makes you taller, and I drink milk.  I will grow to 6-7.
