Luke 7: Jesus raises a widow’s son

Overview Background and general observations Jesus: the sovereign God Jesus: the almighty, all seeing, all knowing God Jesus: the God of compassion Jesus: the Lord of life So what?

Background and general observations Many people are sceptical about this account –Specific details –A very public miracle (2 large crowds) –General objections to the concept Other Biblical accounts

Jesus: the sovereign God Nain is not mentioned anywhere else in scripture Small city near Capernaum Jewish custom – bury body the same day –Probably late in the afternoon Jesus arrived at just the right time

Jesus: the almighty, all seeing, all knowing God Jesus, his disciples and a large crowd went to Nain They met a large funeral procession Jesus saw the woman and knew her circumstances Jesus cared about this woman –This is why Jesus went there –Account doesn’t record any other miracles there

Jesus: the God of compassion The widow’s circumstances A tragic life story The Lord’s heart went out to her “Don’t cry” –She would have been leading the mourners –Jesus literally blocks the way Jesus touched the coffin –Ritual uncleanness / healing

Jesus: the Lord of life Jesus raises the young man –He sits up and starts talking –Jesus gave him back to his mother The people were filled with awe –“A great prophet has appeared among us” –“God has come down to help his people All of these people will die again Jesus gives eternal life

So what? Are we a convinced and believing people? Do we have an answer for those who doubt? Do we believe that God orders events and puts us in the “right place at the right time”? Are we looking for the reason why we are here at this time? Are we asking God to show us the world as He sees it and to know His heart? Do we have and show compassion to those around us? Are we ready to be used by God to be (not give) the answer to their needs? Are we always looking for opportunities to hold out the Word of Life?
