Presentation transcript:

Our continuing obligations toward our physical families. 1 Timothy 5:3 Honor widows who are widows indeed; 4 but if any widow has children or grandchildren, they must first learn to practice piety in regard to their own family and to make some return to their parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God. … 8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. … 16 If any woman who is a believer has dependent widows, she must assist them and the church must not be burdened, so that it may assist those who are widows indeed.

The Church’s obligation to those truly in need. 1 Timothy 5:3 Honor widows who are widows indeed; … 9 A widow is to be put on the list only if she is not less than sixty years old, having been the wife of one man, 10 having a reputation for good works; and if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality to strangers, if she has washed the saints' feet, if she has assisted those in distress, and if she has devoted herself to every good work. 11 But refuse to put younger widows on the list, for when they feel sensual desires in disregard of Christ, they want to get married, 12 thus incurring condemnation, because they have set aside their previous pledge.

The Church’s obligation to those truly in need. 1 Timothy 5:13 At the same time they also learn to be idle, as they go around from house to house; and not merely idle, but also gossips and busybodies, talking about things not proper to mention. 14 Therefore, I want younger widows to get married, bear children, keep house, and give the enemy no occasion for reproach; 15 for some have already turned aside to follow Satan. 16 If any woman who is a believer has dependent widows, she must assist them and the church must not be burdened, so that it may assist those who are widows indeed.

Three points: 1. What is the Church’s obligation toward widows and others in genuine, long term need? 2. What does this passage teach us about the role and duties of a Christian mother? 3. What is the ‘list of widows’?

1. What is the Church’s obligation toward widows and others in genuine need? Psalm 146:9 The LORD protects the strangers; He supports the fatherless and the widow…

1. What is the Church’s obligation toward widows and others in genuine, long term need? Acts 6:1 Now at this time while the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint arose on the part of the Hellenistic Jews against the native Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food.

1. What is the Church’s obligation toward widows and others in genuine, long term need? 2 Thessalonians 3:10 For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either. 11 For we hear that some among you are leading an undisciplined life, doing no work at all, but acting like busybodies. 12 Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to work in quiet fashion and eat their own bread.

1. What is the Church’s obligation toward widows and others in genuine, long term need? 2 Corinthians 8:13 For this is not for the ease of others and for your affliction, but by way of equality --

2. What does this passage teach us about the role and duties of a Christian mother? 1 Timothy 5:9 A widow is to be put on the list only if she is not less than sixty years old, having been the wife of one man, 10 having a reputation for good works; and if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality to strangers, if she has washed the saints' feet, if she has assisted those in distress, and if she has devoted herself to every good work. … 14 …I want younger widows to get married, bear children, keep house, and give the enemy no occasion for reproach; 15 for some have already turned aside to follow Satan.

2. What does this passage teach us about the role and duties of a Christian mother? Titus 2:4 so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.

2. What does this passage teach us about the role and duties of a Christian mother? Proverbs 31:27 She looks well to the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness.

2. What does this passage teach us about the role and duties of a Christian mother? 1 Timothy 5:14 …I want younger widows to get married, bear children, keep house, and give the enemy no occasion for reproach

3. What is the ‘list of widows’? 1 Timothy 5:3 Honor widows who are widows indeed; … 9 A widow is to be put on the list only if she is not less than sixty years old…. … 11 But refuse to put younger widows on the list, for when they feel sensual desires in disregard of Christ, they want to get married, 12 thus incurring condemnation, because they have set aside their previous pledge. 13 At the same time they also learn to be idle, as they go around from house to house; and not merely idle, but also gossips and busybodies, talking about things not proper to mention.

Summary applications from 1 Timothy 5: Christians should help members of their physical family who have real financial need. 2.The Church should provide for Christians, such as widows without physical family, who have real financial need. 3.Christian mothers should stay at home and raise their children.

Two ways to live as a single without earthly family. 1 Timothy 5:5 Now she who is a widow indeed and who has been left alone, has fixed her hope on God and continues in entreaties and prayers night and day. 6 But she who gives herself to wanton pleasure is dead even while she lives. 7 Prescribe these things as well, so that they may be above reproach. … 13 At the same time they also learn to be idle, as they go around from house to house; and not merely idle, but also gossips and busybodies, talking about things not proper to mention. … 15 for some have already turned aside to follow Satan.

Two ways to live as a single without earthly family. 1 Corinthians 7:39 A wife is bound as long as her husband lives; but if her husband is dead, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord. 2 Corinthians 6:14 Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness?

Isaiah 63:9 In all their affliction He was afflicted, And the angel of His presence saved them; In His love and in His mercy He redeemed them, And He lifted them and carried them all the days of old.

Psalm 56:8 You have taken account of my wanderings; Put my tears in Your bottle. Are they not in Your book?
