The Widow at the Treasury To describe the story of the woman at the Treasury To explain why Jesus praised her To reflect on what this teaches Christians today As Jesus sat near the Temple treasury, he watched the people as they dropped in their money. Many rich men dropped in a lot of money; then a poor widow came along and dropped in two little copper coins, worth about a penny. He called his disciples together and said to them, “I tell you that this poor widow put more in the offering box than all the others. For the others put in what they had to spare of their riches; but she, poor as she is, put in all she had—she gave all she had to live on.” What would be your reaction to what the widow did? What would be praise-worthy about what the widow did?

Exam Q’s on discipleship

As Jesus sat near the Temple treasury, he watched the people as they dropped in their money. Many rich men dropped in a lot of money; then a poor widow came along and dropped in two little copper coins, worth about a penny. He called his disciples together and said to them, “I tell you that this poor widow put more in the offering box than all the others. For the others put in what they had to spare of their riches; but she, poor as she is, put in all she had—she gave all she had to live on.” 1. Summarise the story. 2. Explain 3 reasons why Jesus praised the widow. (faith/ trust/ love/ commitment/ humility) 3. Why was it surprising that Jesus praised her? 2 reasons. **What should Christians learn from this? -Does God want us to be totally destitute? -Is it about giving up everything to serve God? -Is it about showing regular commitment to God, no matter what? -Is it about being private but sincere in your love and service of God?
