Context The circumstances or facts that surround a particular event, situation, etc. The "when" and "what" of a situation.

Highlight the Context Highlight the context you write in a CD sentence. A quote by itself is NOT a CD sentence.

Stating Context with Lead-in Words Here are some possible lead-in words with which you can start your sentence: WhenAfter SinceWhileas Before Although.

Context Shown in Blue After Juan’s mother died, the mistress gave him his mother’s earring After Juan’s mother died, the mistress gave him his mother’s earring, “it cleans the blood to wear an earring.”(Trevino, 6).

Context Shown in Blue When Juan questioned Diego’s painting of the pope with such an unkind expression, Diego replied, “I rather think he is a man enough to be pleased that I have seen him as tough and strong.” (Trevino p.137)

Now you try… Write 2 CD sentences for 2 different scenes from Rikki-tikki-tavi. Use your character chart as a quide.

Rikki one chunk paragraph Step 2: Write a Topic Sentence Look at your green CMs, how can we answer the prompt?

Rikki one chunk paragraph Step 3: Write a CD Look at your red CDs, how can we “back up” our topic sentence? Need evidence. Think of the CDs in context. When Nagaina was threatening the family, Rikki stepped up and said, “Yes, you will go away, and you will never come back; for you will go to the rubbish heap with Nag. Fight, widow!”.

Rikki one chunk paragraph Step 3: Write a CD (period b) Look at your red CDs, how can we “back up” our topic sentence? Need evidence. Think of the CDs in context. P.28 “as he held he closed his jaws tighter and tighter, for he made sure he would be banged to death and for the honor of his family he preferred to be found with his teeth locked. (Kipling p.28) P.31 “Yes, you will go away, and you will never come back; for you will go to the rubbish heap with Nag. Fight, widow!” (Kipling p.31) P.33 “…his little white teeth were clenched on her tail and he went down with her – and very few mongooses, however wise and old they may be, care to follow a cobra into its hole.” (Kipling p.33)

Rikki one chunk paragraph Step 3: Write a CD (period b) Look at your red CDs, how can we “back up” our topic sentence? Need evidence. Think of the CDs in context. As Nagaina fled with her remaining egg, Rikki followed her into her snake hole, at the same time “…his little white teeth were clenched on her tail and he went down with her – and very few mongooses, however wise and old they may be, care to follow a cobra into its hole.” (Kipling p.33)

Please have out your review worksheet to quickly review with a neighbor. Write your name and number on the review. Have out your yellow t-chart.

Rikki one chunk paragraph Step 4: Write two CMs Look at your green CMs, how can we explain our CD? Need to “respond”.
