King Solomon and His Sons Mr. Perrotti Theology I – Kings Part 3

Youngest and Beloved Son of David King Solomon King of Israel for 40 years King Solomon Solomon was the son of King David and Bathsheba. Solomon was not the oldest son of David, but David promised Bathsheba that Solomon would be the next king. (One of the Three Promises God made to David in their Covenant)

Anointed King at 12 Years Old! When David’s elder son Adonijah declared himself king, David ordered his servants to bring Solomon to the Gihon spring where the priest anointed him while David was still alive. Solomon inherited a considerable empire from his father. His older brother was angry but before David died all was well with Adonijah. In time he honored his father’s wishes to keep the Covenant with God.

Known for his great Wisdom Although he was a ruler at a young age, he soon became known for his wisdom. God appeared to him in a dream and to Solomon he could ask for any gift from God. Solomon chose Wisdom! In his happiness God honored the rest of his Covenant with David, Solomon was a great peace time King!

The first and most famous incident of his cleverness as a judge was when two women came to his court with a baby whom both women claimed as their own. Solomon threatened to split the baby in half. One woman was prepared to accept the decision, but the other begged the King to give the live baby to the other woman. Solomon then knew the second woman was the mother.

His Cleverness Spread People from surrounding nations also came to hear Solomon’s wisdom He composed 3,000 proverbs and 1,005 songs. He wrote the Song of Songs, the Book of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes In a brief, unelaborated, and enigmatic passage, the Hebrew Bible describes how the fame of Solomon's wisdom and wealth spread far and wide, so much so that the queen of Sheba decided that she should meet him. The queen is described as visiting with a number of gifts including gold, spices and precious stones. When Solomon gave her "all her desire, whatsoever she asked," she left satisfied (1 Kings 10:10). Sheba1 Kings 10:10 The Song of Songs A book in the Bible in which Solomon declares his love for God. His words have become very popular when describing Divine and sacred love between God and Man, Man and wife TSGFLs60ko.com TSGFLs60ko.com

The Temple –Solomon’s Finest Achievement Once Solomon’s empire was tranquil, he began to build the Holy Temple Solomon was also renowned for his other building projects He received wood from King Hiram of Tyre and imposed a compulsory labor service on both the Israelites and the foreign nations that were under his control.

His Other Building Projects He spent 13 years building his own palace He also built a city wall A Citadel called the Millo A palace for the daughter of Pharaoh (who was one of his wives) Facilities for foreign traders He erected cities for chariots and horsemen and created storage cities

Israel as God Promised was at its Greatest! He extended Jerusalem to the north and fortified cities near the mountains of Judah and Jerusalem.

Solomon’s Downfall Solomon’s downfall came in his old age He had taken many foreign wives, whom he allowed to worship other gods He even built shrines for the sacrifices of his foreign wives he placed heavy taxation on the people, who became bitter. He favored Judah, which made the 10 Northern Tribes angry. According to 1 Kings 11: Solomon's "wives turned his heart after other gods", their own national deities, to whom Solomon built temples, thus incurring divine anger and retribution in the form of the division of the kingdom after Solomon's death.1 Kings 11:

Solomon’s Son and Enemy Death, succession of Rehoboam, and kingdom division According to the Hebrew Bible, Solomon died of natural causes at around 80 years of age. Upon Solomon's death, his son, Rehoboam, succeeded him as king. Rehoboam However, ten of the Tribes of Israel refused to accept him as king, causing the United Monarchy to split and form the northern Kingdom of Israel South was called the Kingdom of Judah Jeroboam ruler of the North The 10 tribes in the north accepted Jeroboam as King as he escaped his brothers anger. He was a stronger King, but like his brother and Father weakened with all of the pagan influences. The North became the Kingdom of Israel.

Solomon’s Death was a result of his Unfaithfulness Near the end of his life Solomon was forced to contend with several enemies including Hadad of Edom, Rezon of Zobah, and one of his officials named Jeroboam who was from the tribe of Ephraim According to 1 Kings 11:30-34, it was because of these sins that "the Lord punishes Solomon by removing 10 of the 12 Tribes of Israel from the Israelites. Judah and Benjamin remain.

Proclaimed in the Book of Kings And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods. But he did not keep what the Lord commanded. Therefore the Lord said to Solomon, "Since this has been your practice and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes that I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you and will give it to your servant. Yet for the sake of David your father I will not do it in your days, but I will tear it out of the hand of your son. However, I will not tear away all the kingdom, but I will give one tribe to your son, for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem that I have chosen.

Solomon’s Highlights Was King for 40 years after the death of his Father David. As promised, Israel was at its zenith, or pinnacle. He built the Temple in honor of his father David. He made many allies and eventually enemies! He died at the age of 80 years old!
