LIVING IN THE SIGHT OF GOD Chapter FOURTEEN A Kingdom Torn In Two

I KINGS There are 19 Kings [all bad] in the Northern Kingdom and 19 [8 good and 11 bad] in the Southern. As Saul who had no heart for God, David who had a whole heart for God and Solo- mon who only had half a heart for Him -

I KINGS these 38 are a mixture of all three. The book of First Kings records the lives of the people of Israel as they lived “In the Eyes of the Lord”[11:6; 14:22; 15:5, 11, 26, 34; 16:7, 19, 25, 30; 21:20, 25, 22:43, 52]. This expression is repeated 14 times in this book. We all need to ponder the theme of this book: Living in The Sight of God

I KINGS 11 *I Kings 11:6 Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord, that’s bad *I Kings 14:22 Now Judah did evil in the sight of the Lord, and they provoked Him to jealousy

I KINGS I Kings 14 vs. 23 For they also built for themselves high places, sacred pillars, and wooden images on every high hill and under every green tree. I Kings 15:5 because David did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, and had not turned aside from anything that He commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite

I KINGS Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as did his father David. 26 And he(Nadab) did evil in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the way of his father, and in his sin by which he had made Israel sin. 34 He(Baasha) did evil in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin by which he had made Israel sin.

The Outline of I Kings I Kings Has Two Parts 1.Solomon: Forty Years The first 11 chapters are about Solomon’s 40 years And Solomon was king 40 years David was king 40 years Saul was king 40 years

Solomon’s Reign as King Good Start 1-4 Great Choices 5-8 God Given fame and fortune 9-10 Chapter 11 he had a bad and grievous ending

Solomon’s Reign as King Part 2 Divided Kingdom: Eighty Years Reheboam Complex: forsake wisdom 12 Two new kingdoms, two old problems: idolatry and disobedience Elijah: God’s Man stands alone 17-19

Solomon’s Reign as King Part 2 Divided Kingdom: Eighty Years Reheboam Complex: forsake wisdom 12 Two new kingdoms, two old problems: idolatry and disobedience Elijah: God’s Man stands alone Ahab: the worst 20-22

FOUR GREAT TRUTHS GLEANED FROM THIS BOOK: 1.God keeps His Word so we should search it daily 2.God will judge the Apostasy Apostasy means to abandon the things of God

Four Forms of Apostasy That God Hates 1.The Worship that is only of Convenience I Kings 12:28 Jeroboam’s Gold Calves Therefore the king asked advice, made two calves of gold, and said to the people, “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, O Israel, which brought you up from the land of Egypt!”

Four Forms of Apostasy That God Hates 2.The Worship that materializes the Spiritual Vs.29 And he set up one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan. 3.The Worship that lowers God’s Standards Vs.31 He made shrines on the high places, and made priests from every class of people, who were not of the sons of Levi.

Four Forms of Apostasy That God Hates 33 Even after this, Jeroboam did not change his evil ways, but once more appointed priests for the high places from all sorts of people. Anyone who wanted to become a priest he consecrated for the high places.

Four Forms of Apostasy That God Hates So he made offerings on the altar which he had made at Bethel on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, in the month which he had devised in his own heart. God said to do it on the 10 th day of the 7 th month

FOUR GREAT TRUTHS GLEANED FROM THIS BOOK: 1. God will judge the apostasy 2.God hates false worship (I Kings 11:33) I will do this because they have forsaken me and worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Molech the god of the Ammonites, and have not walked in my ways, nor done what is right in my eyes, nor kept my statutes and laws as David, Solomon's father, did

FOUR GREAT TRUTHS GLEANED FROM THIS BOOK: 3.God punishes Disobedience I Kings 13:21 He cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, "This is what the LORD says: `You have defied the word of the LORD and have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you.

FOUR GREAT TRUTHS GLEANED FROM THIS BOOK: God punishes Disobedience I Kings 13:34 This was the sin of the house of Jeroboam that led to its downfall and to its destruction from the face of the earth.

FOUR GREAT TRUTHS GLEANED FROM THIS BOOK: God punishes Disobedience I Kings 13:34 This was the sin of the house of Jeroboam that led to its downfall and to its destruction from the face of the earth. I Kings 13 is the story of the prophet who was punished because he disobeyed the Lord

FOUR GREAT TRUTHS GLEANED FROM THIS BOOK: 4.God doesn’t forget His Warnings In Ahab’s time, Hiel of Bethel built Jericho. He laid its foundation at the cost of his firstborn son, Abiram and he set up its gates at the cost of his youngest son Segub, in accordance with the word of the LORD spoken by Joshua son of Nun

FOUR GREAT TRUTHS GLEANED FROM THIS BOOK: Galatians 6:7-8 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.

FOUR GREAT TRUTHS GLEANED FROM THIS BOOK: God rewards Obedience so we should obey Him always Remember Solomon I Kings 10:14 1.His personal income God sent him 2. His wisdom from God was known around the world. [I Kings 4:29-34]

FOUR GREAT TRUTHS GLEANED FROM THIS BOOK: God rewards Obedience so we should obey Him wholeheartedly Remember Solomon I Kings 10:14 1.His personal income God sent him 2. His wisdom from God was known around the world. [I Kings 4:29-34]

FOUR GREAT TRUTHS GLEANED FROM THIS BOOK: God seeks devotion so we should worship him wholeheartedly I Kings 9:4 says God wants our Hearts 18:21 God wants our trust

FOUR GREAT TRUTHS GLEANED FROM THIS BOOK: Deuteronomy 4:29 But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul. Chronicles 16:9 For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.
