Group 1: Terms of Focus ●Flat vs. Round ●Showing vs. Telling

Flat Characters Definition: A character that stays essentially the same throughout the work. Also known as a two-dimensional character. Ex: Emilia (Othello)

Round Characters Definition: A three-dimensional character that’s subject to change, growth and inconsistencies. Ex. Milkman (Song of Solomon), Frodo (Lord of the Rings), Luke Skywalker (Star Wars)

Showing Definition: Presenting characters’ words and actions without commentary and allowing dramatization to imply their motives, feelings and values. Ex. Jens’s eyes became teary as he curled up into a ball.

Telling Definition: The method by which the author describes, and comments on, characters and events, as a means of shaping the audience’s response. Ex. Jens was sad.

Protagonist (Hero, Heroine) Definition: The main character in a work of drama, fiction or narrative poetry. Ex: Milkman (Solomon), Hamlet (Hamlet), and Katniss (The Hunger Games)

Antagonist (Villain) Definition: A character that opposes the protagonists goals and interests and so creates the major conflict in the work. Ex: Claudius (Hamlet), Iago (Othello), Macon and Guitar (Song of Solomon)

Foil Definition: A character who contrasts with the protagonist in ways that bring out certain of his or her moral, emotional, or intellectual qualities. Ex: Guitar (Song of Solomon), Mercutio (Romeo and Juliet), and Laertes (Hamlet)
