Images and Sounds of your Country Summary of IS3 from Hungary

Our question was: Introduce your national flag to us. its history, how it has changed, are there any symbols on it, do the colours mean anything, are there any interesting facts, traditions, stories in connection with it

IS1 & IS12 – St. Stephen Middle School, Canada The Canadian Flag It has two red stripes one white strip and an eleven point maple leaf. The colors of the Canadian flag were adopted from two flags, the white from the England flag’s cross, and the red strips from the France flag. Red and white are also Canada’s official colors.

History In Canada they have a flag for each province. Canada used to share the British flag but they wanted a flag The flag made its first appearance on February 15, The idea for the maple leaf came from George F. G. Stanley and John Matheson.

History Joan O’Malley was the one who sewed the first Canadian flag. She was asked to by the Prime Minister, Lester B. Pearson. Joan wasn’t a professional seamstress, and had not experienced sewing often, but she managed to create the beautiful Canadian Flag.

The Maple Leaf The maple leaf from the maple tree is a one of the biggest symbols of Canada. Also the maple leaf is a sign of duty in the country. The meaning of the maple leaf is because it falls in fall and in Canada there are many maple trees.

How it has changed? The Great Britain Union Flag (1606–1800) The UK Union Flag (1801–present) Flag used (1868–1921) Flag used (1921–1957) First Flag Proposal to Parliament, the Pearson Pennant Flag of the Royal Military College of Canada Current flag, 1965 to date

The flag atop the Peace Tower Peace Tower in Ottawa Ontario at a size of 2.25 meters by 4.5 meters.

Some Interesting Facts about the Canadian Flag The Canadian flag can never be allowed to touch the ground. The colors each have a different meaning, white means peace and honesty and red means hardiness, bravery, strength, and valor. The largest Canadian flag ever made was 38 meters by 76 meters. 80 people were needed to carry it, and it was worth $ dollars!!! So far this year, the government has bought over flags! If you want a flag that has been on the Peace Tower, you have to wait 10 years to receive it. The flag that is on the top of the Peace Tower is up 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is changed every day by a Parliament Hill employee. See more… See more…

Tradition One tradition is every morning when the employee changes the flag, the national anthem will play and everyone stops what they’re doing to stand straight with their hands at their sides, here are the lyrics: l "O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North, strong and free! From far and wide, O Canada, We stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee."

IS7 – Oued Eddahab Junior High School, Morocco The Moroccan Flag The Moroccan Flag The overall background is Red It is Red with a green pentacle (five-pointed, linear star) known as Solomon's seal in the center of the flag. It was introduced in 1912, when Morocco was placed under French protectorate

Colours The colors on the Moroccan flag represent the following: Red - hardiness, bravery, strength & valour Green - hope, joy and love and in many cultures have a sacred significance and is the traditional color of Islam Solomon’s seal

History of the Moroccan Flag The use of the flag in Morocco as a symbol of the state dates way back to the Almoravide dynasty ( ad). Prior to this time, white silk banners were often carried in battle, sometimes with Koranic inscriptions written on them. The Almoravides institutionalized this practice. They gave one banner to every unit of 100 soldiers. The two following dynasties (the Merinides and the Saadiens) continued the use of the White flag as the symbol of the State. The Alaouites (beginning in the 17th Century), which are the ruling dynasties, were the first to introduce the red flag. It was raised every morning and lowered every evening on the fortresses at Rabat and Sale. The green Sulayman star on the flag was introduced in 1912.

Etiquett of the Flag Due care and consideration must be taken to ensure that the Moroccan flag is always flown the correct way up A tattered or faded flag of Moroccan should be removed and replaced with a new flag The Moroccan flag should never be allowed to drag along the ground The National flag of Moroccan should never be flown above another national flag on the same staff as this would suggest superiority, or conversely, inferiority of one flag, or Nation, over another

IS8 – Het Nieuwe Eemland, Netherlands The Dutch flag is a horizontal tricolor of red, white and blue. More specifically naming the colors as bright vermilion, cobalt blue and bright white. It was adopted on 19th February 1937.

The History of the Dutch Flag The earliest examples of the flag date from the 16th century. The first version was mentioned in a 1572 orange-white-blue flag. At the conclusion of the Union of Utrecht in 1579, this was also the official flag. This was the original flag of the Republic of Seven United Netherlands. In the course of less than a century it was replaced by orange red, so at the end of the Eighty Years War in 1648, the de facto flag was changed in Red - White-Blue, though still spoke of the "Orange Flag".

Hoisting the Dutch Flag The Dutch flag is a flag instruction of the Dutch government to government-related institutions, which indicates when the Dutch flag is hoisted, and how. The dates on which the flag is hoisted on government buildings are set in an order from the Minister President of December 22, To individuals, businesses and institutions such instruction is requested, as far as possible, to follow. IS11 – Norkem Park High School, SouthAfrica The national flag was designed by the former South African state Herald,Mr Fred Brownell and was first used on 27 April 1994.
