A Difference between Kings and Chronicles Time Period of Kings Authorship: During exile Time Period of Chronicles Authorship: Post exile Theological question in Kings: “Has God failed?” “How could this have happened to us?” “Is Marduk of Babylon more Powerful than Yahweh?” – Answer: God has not failed. Instead, God has fulfilled his warnings to the nation about the consequences of failing to obey the covenant. Theological questions in Chronicles: “In the judgment of exile, had God ended his covenant with Israel?” “Are we still God’s people?” “Do God’s promises to David pertain to us? – Answer: God still sees all Israel as his covenant people and will yet fulfill his promises to David

The Building of the Temple A desire from David (1 Chron. 17:1) – One of many tasks desired by David that man might worship and have relationship with God. Approval by God for Solomon (1 Chron. 22:6- 10) – David had “spilled too much blood” – Solomon would “have rest from all his enemies” Preparations made for Solomon by David (1 Chron )

Preparing for the Temple Much we can learn from in the account of the preparations made for the temple! Making the Application: – We are God’s temple (1 Cor. 3:16; 6:19) – God’s house is the church/Christians/US! (Heb. 3:6)

A Desire to do what can be done Great desire met with great reward by God! – David’s desire to build a house for God results in God building an everlasting house for David! (1 Chron. 17:10-15) David does what he can (makes preparations) – Like Barnabas with Saul. Responsibility taken that did not need to be his – 2 Chron. 22:5; “Solomon is inexperienced” “the temple is a great task” “I will make preparations” – 2 Chronicles 29:1-2a “I have made every effort to provide what is needed for the temple of my God…”

A Great task met with Great plans and organization Amasses incredible wealth – As an individual – As a nation Organizes the Levites (1 Chron. 23:2-6) Organizes the priests (1 Chron. 24:3) – Takes the priests and “divided them into groups to carry out their assigned responsibilities.” David organizes the musicians (1 Chron. 25:1; “David selected” these men and “assigned responsibility”) – Done by David through God’s direction 1 Chron. 25:8; “They cast lots to determine their responsibilities oldest as well as youngest, teacher as well as student.” (Prov. 16:33; a lot is cast into the lap-) 2 Chron. 29:25; “25 And he set the Levites in the house of the Lord with cymbals, with psalteries, and with harps, according to the commandment of David, and of Gad the king's seer, and Nathan the prophet: for so was the commandment of the Lord by his prophets.”

A Great task met with Great plans and organization Divisions of Gatekeepers, supervisors of Store houses, leaders of the army, and royal officials are listed in 1 Chron David records these blueprints for Solomon – 1 Chron. 28:11-19; he gives him “the blueprints of all he envisioned for the” temple. This included; It’s items used in service, its assigned responsibilities – Vs. 19 a most important summary: “All of this I put in writing as the Lord directed me and gave me insight regarding the details of the blueprints.”

An incredible example of Giving Generous giving by David as an individual! (1 Chron. 29:1-5) – A tremendous prepared investment!!! “Using the ‘light’ standard talent of 67.3 lbs. as the standard for calculation, David had supplied 101 tons of gold and tons of silver.” (NET Bible notes) An average African elephant weighs around 5 tons. An average SUV weighs 2.5 tons “Over a billion dollars of gold and 16 million of silver” – His words and example is used as an incredible influence to the people! He leads by example 1 Chron. 29:3; “Now, to show my commitment to the temple of my God, I donate my personal treasure of gold and silver to the temple of my God, in addition to all that I have already supplied for this holy temple. 1 Chron. 29:5; “Who else wants to contribute to the Lord today?”

An incredible example of Giving Generous giving by the Group! – After the people see the vision to serve God they contribute wholeheartedly. – The bulk of the resources come from the people. “the temple as much the people’s or more so than David’s or Solomon’s.” The Right attitude in giving – 1 Chron. 29:9 Then the people rejoiced because they had offered so willingly, for they made their offering to the Lord with a whole heart, and King David also rejoiced greatly. – David’s prayer: “But who am I and who are my people that we should be able to offer as generously as this? For all things come from You, and from Your hand we have given You.” (1 Chron. 29:14)

Encouragement Given to the people and to Solomon 1 Chron. 28:1-10 – Reiterates God’s promise and covenant – instructs the people to “carefully observe all the commands of the Lord your God.” (vs. 8) – Encourages Solomon to “be strong and do it!” (vs. 10) Final encouragement to Solomon in 1 Chronicles – 1 Chron. 29:20-21 (Empowering Words!)
