Professional Development and Research at UNM CEMELA Retreat May 24, 2005

Summer 2005 Institute  38 K-5 participants from three partner districts.  Sylvia’s class: Language, Culture, and Mathematics.  CGI training.  Starting in fall, participants will be mentored in their classrooms.

Roosevelt Elementary School Study Group  teachers will begin meeting in fall of 2005 for two hours, every three weeks.  Focus of meetings will be: (1) integration of students’ cultures and languages with mathematical problem solving (CGI); (2) assessment; and (3) family math.

Two, Full Day Conferences  Roosevelt Elementary School study group participants will lead/facilitate conferences for Summer Institute participants (one in fall and one in spring).

Research of PD Activities  Study group participants at Roosevelt use mix of qualitative methods to examine the three foci of group (best practices presented at conferences for Summer Institute participants).  Research conducted with teachers by CEMELA Fellows and Faculty.

Question for Break Out Groups  How will your local PD activities both address and impact teachers’ knowledge and beliefs about Latino students’ linguistic and cultural backgrounds to create highly effective mathematics learning environments?

Groups organized by the following four areas of research (1) Explore teachers’ integration of mathematics reform practices with effective principles of instruction for Latinos; (2) Investigate teachers’ discourse in Spanish and in English to mediate learning of high level mathematics (e.g., probability and algebraic thinking); (3) Examine teachers’ conceptions of the integration of language development, culture, and mathematics; and (4) Utilize case studies to exemplify teachers’ practices in mathematics within the context of language and culture.
