OBESITY IN CHILDREN YADIRA MISLA

WHAT IS OBESITY? Obesity is an excess proportion of total body fat. A person is considered obese when his or her weight is 20% or more above normal weight. Obesityweight

CONTRIBUTORS OF OBESITY There are many reasons why a child would be and can become overweight. Some reasons are as follows: Heredity: some children unfortunately inherit obesity from previous generations, making it a much harder task to tackle. Aside from health issues such as asthma, diabetes and high blood pressure which may also play a large part in a Childs obesity issue. Age: the older a person gets, the slower there metabolism becomes making it more difficult for the body to burn fat. A child faces many body changes as they grow and can become victims of obesity. Lack of exercise: Sedentary lifestyles and lack of physical activity is a large contributing factor to obesity. ( video games and T.V versus outdoor sports and afternoon walks.) Illness: some children may become severally sick and may have to take medications unknown to their bodies. Medications such as steroids can cause weight gain and uncontrolled hunger and thyroid illnesses may also be an example of an illness that may cause weight gain. Unhealthy foods: children are consuming foods high in sugar and fatsand low in nutrients.

STAYING HEALTHY In order for our children to live a healthy lifestyle we as parents and teachers must work with them and model the following items: Eating healthy foods: children need to eat a healthy balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, milk and foods low in sugar and fat and high in nutrients. Exercise : physical activity is crucial. Our children must active and in movement in order to keep the excess weight off and stay healthy.

HEALTHY TEACHER I as the teacher must exemplify to my students what a healthy lifestyle means. I am there biggest role model and must teach them how to eat healthy, exercise and live a healthy balanced lifestyle. My classroom lessons will incorporate hands on activities that students can take home with them and exemplify for their families.
