Learning Video Production The world of video production offers a multitude of different career opportunities for students who desire the skill, know-how, and passion to get the job done. In order to teach our students effectively, our program offers a multitude of different multi-media resources to help develop their talents and abilities within the specific area of their choice.

Why use Multi-Media??? Within video production, the application of various multi-media tools can be easily understood as a natural part of this area itself. Infact, many experts within the education field stand behind the use of multi-media sources to effectively deliver course content.

According to Thomas Hulsmann in his article entitled, Designing Video and Multimedia for Open and Flexible Learning, he notes several important considerations that must be understood when applying multimedia resources into any learning activity:

The Benefits of Multimedia: “it adds cognitive value and facilitates skills development. it adds experential value. it activates and nurtures attitudes and feeling, thus adding nurturing value” (Hulsmann, 2007, p. 117).

Final Cut Pro Final Cut Pro, manufactured by Apple Computer sets the standard as one of the premier video editing software packages that has come to be an industry standard. Those that have used the product credit it’s ability to incorporate various forms of media. A must have for any serious video production professional.

A few words about Final Cut Pro: “If you’re serious about editing, you’ll probably want to have a dedicated editing station, and Final Cut Studio is a very compelling video postproduction collection that is silly to ignore out of hand for only operating systems reasons. Even if you do most of your computing work in Windows, with Final Cut Studio, Apple makes a compelling case for you to take a look” (Sauer, 2005, p.40).

Adobe Photoshop When it comes to digital still photography, the first software of choice in our program is Adobe Photoshop. It’s functionality gives us many options to manipulate photos in a way that helps to deliver excellence in offering top quality photos for our department members.

Quotes from a satisfied user of Adobe Photoshop: “I am not an artist by trade, but for over a decade I’ve used Adobe Photoshop to edit and manipulate graphic images. I’ve always been impressed with the things Photoshop allows me to do. But Photoshop CS3 blew me away. Not only did it add dozens of timesaving features, but it also sports an improved user interface that makes using it on a laptop a lot more pleasant” (Levitus, 2007, p. 4)

SUPER The use of SUPER is a highly advanced video conversion software that will allow our finished videos to be converted into many video formats, such as Quicktime, Real Player, and Windows Media Files. We will use this software to provide our members with the right format they need for the kind of equipment they’re using.

Learner Objectives The use of the software mentioned will be administered under careful instruction as there are many expectations of the students before they begin to apply this software within the process of video production. All students will be notified of the 3 essential anticipated outcomes of their grasp of the video production field before they begin application of the given software:

Learner Objectives The student will express a thorough knowledge and identify the most professional means in which a video camera should be operated. The student will operate a camera in a way that is safe not only for themselves but to others around them. The student will demonstrate appropriate proper use of equipment that will not lend itself to damage or malfunction. The student will exemplify a working knowledge of the various components of video composition. The student will discuss various video composition components (wide, medium, tight, cutaway, etc.). The student will discuss how and why each shot is achieved along with its role in the video production process.

Learner Objectives The student will be expected to show knowledge and provide a thorough understanding of the various aspects of supportive video production equipment (tripod, microphone, recordable media, batteries). The student will be required to show how each of these play a vital role in the video production process.

Technology Integration Process: The students within the program will be given an opportunity to reach all expected outcomes through the use of hands-on learning. Students will be given a thorough description of all video concepts and software and will be asked to relay the information back in evidence of a thorough comprehension of all subject matter. As the learning process is primarily based upon the student physically demonstrating their grasp of the use of the equipment, they will be encouraged to become familiar with the software, through the use of field application. The student will be evaluated on their demonstration of learned outcomes, while given the opportunity to correct any unwanted behaviors with constructive instruction. Students will also be provided with positive feedback that reinforces positive behaviors, while also encouraging the use of behaviors not clearly demonstrated.
