Education Beyond the Classroom BA Hons Education Studies

What is Education? Working in small groups attempt to define the word education. Put your thoughts on post it notes on the flip chart paper provided Be prepared to share these thoughts and ideas with the other groups.

Session Objectives Understand the term education Recognise a range of resources available to education Reflect on the effects of educational opportunities on their current position Begin to evaluate range of educational sources against key theories of learning

Defining Education Defining education requires you to consider the following questions Is education a process, product or system? Who is education for ? Who determines parameters ? What is the purpose of education?

Where does learning happen? Working independently identify – 4 places where learning could take place What do these places look like? What sounds do you hear? What can you smell? How does it feel to learning here? Now share this with your group

Value of EBC EBtC is widely recognised as a means of encouraging a number of desirable educational outcomes and assuring the realisation of current policy agendas. Ofsted suggested that ‘outdoor education gives depth to curriculum and contributes to students’ physical, personal and social education’ (Ofsted, 2004).

Why have educational visits? Think about your own experiences and decide upon two positive experiences of school trips – a)Discuss a visit you attended whilst a pupil at school b)Discuss a visit you attended as a member of staff or parent What made these trips positive and memorable?

Why Have Educational Visits? To develop knowledge To develop skills To extend experience As a reward To celebrate eg the end of term / a festival Extra-curricular enhancement

How Often? Reward / treat / celebration? Occasionally enhancement of curriculum or extra-curricula provision On-going Integral to school planning, written into curriculum / extra- curricula plans Frequent school planning with offsite provision seen as integral eg San Diego ‘school in the park’
