ASCCC 101 Alphabet Soup Julie Adams Wheeler North

Academic Senate for the California Community Colleges  This breakout will highlight your session binder.  It has five subject areas: –This Institute –The Statewide Senate –The System –Matters of Governance –Effective Local Senates –Two booklets – The Brown Act and Empowering Local Senates  On to the Binder > > > >

Academic Senate for the California Community Colleges

The System Office – Page 85  Uses a similar model to local Trustees –BOG (Board of Governors) oversee the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellors and staff activities. –Like local processes there is an executive, all constituent body that advises the Chancellor – Consultation Council

The System Office  Consultation exists due to Ed Code. –It is laid out in policy via Standing Orders of the BOG –Then actual implementation is laid out in the Executive Orders of the Chancellor –Membership includes: Students, Faculty, CEOs, CIOs, CBOs, CSSOs, CHROs, org reps from 8 CCC organizations and the Chancellor.

The System Office  In general nothing decided here is binding. –But full consensus items tend to be well received by the BOG. –Academic and professional matters will rely primarily on the ASCCC input.

The System Office  The System Office is split into several divisions –Executive –Finance and Facilities Planning –Educational Services –Governmental Relations and External Affairs –Legal Affairs –Student Services –Technology, Research & Information Services

The System Office  The Chancellor has 13 plus advisory committees –The ASCCC has faculty reps on most of these. –Page 85 gives a brief list

The System Office  The ASCCC’s role is two parts –Represent Faculty –Inform Faculty and any others  We represent at all of the above councils and committees, the BOG meetings, and many other legislative efforts. –Legislative advocacy is a critical role you can help with.

The System Office  We inform via: –Senate Rostrum –President Updates –Leg Alerts –The ASCCC Website –Plenary Sessions –Senate Papers –Technical Assistance

Acronym Abuse – Page 97  Think CCC  Have this memorized by tomorrow’s test at 10:00AM  Feel free to stop anybody, anytime for acronym clarification. –You must use real verbs and nouns for it to be a complete sentence.

Plenary Sessions  The semi-annual Plenary sessions are the means by which the body interacts. –There are information sessions – breakouts –Formal interaction – resolutions –Informal interaction – networking and socializing –Keynote engagements – general sessions

Resolutions – Page 37  Resolutions come from any faculty member.  Are voted upon by delegates at plenary sessions.  Are acted upon by the ASCCC Executive Committee and Standing Committees.

Your role as a Delegate  Learn what you can about every resolution –Get input from your local Senate –Vote that input at session –Carry the results and other info back to your local bodies –Share and route Rostrums and Updates –Attend breakouts, become informed and share that locally.

Your role as a Delegate  Attend the new delegate breakout  If you are not a delegate volunteer to be a teller at least once.  Attend the Area Meetings – generally two or three weeks prior to session –Colleges by area are on Page 35  Break bread with others and network your heart out.

Academic Senate for the California Community Colleges  Is the Governance body that represents all CCC Faculty. –Over 120 Member Senates –14 Executive Committee members –Task Forces and Advisory Groups –12 Standing Committees  And would love to enlist your help...

Academic Senate for the California Community Colleges  But we need some things from you.  Update your Senate Directory, pg. 47  Complete the “To Do” list, pg. –10  Disseminate and fill out various surveys that we send out.  Fill out the nomination to serve form on page 29

Academic Senate for the California Community Colleges  In general all actions, research, positions, and activities are directed by the body through resolutions.  They are then carried out by the ASCCC Committees, the Officers, and the Executive Director.

Academic Senate for the California Community Colleges  Each Committee is approximately six members with one as the Chair.  The Chair is usually an Exec. Member.  They typically meet once a month with a few in person meetings and the rest via CCCConfer. –Executive Committee meets in person monthly. (and cross babbles a lot in between meetings)

Academic Senate for the California Community Colleges  Rostrum articles are accepted from anyone with no guarantees.  Session breakouts are often driven by committee product, but any good idea will be considered.

ASCCC Institutes  By resolution the ASCCC puts on various institutes. –Faculty Leadership Institute –Curriculum Institute –Vocational Faculty Leadership Institute –Teaching Institute –Accreditation Institute –Fall and Spring Plenary Sessions

Technical Assistance – Pg 124  Generally first level is a conversation with your Area Rep and the President if the Area Rep can’t solve your issue.  The next level, Technical Assistance, requires that all parties agree to it, and in fact solicit it.

Technical Assistance  Assistance will be by ASCCC and CCLC Presidents/Designees  It comes in 4 forms: –1) informational presentation –2) advisory assistance –3) issue resolution –4) special workshops and presentations
