Engineering Design Capstone Research Project: Part 2 1 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

What will you be doing for the next 5 to 6 weeks? You are going to be applying all of the knowledge and skills you have learned about Engineering Deign. You must solve some kind of design problem that has a POSITIVE impact on society or the environment. You will be researching, designing, and creating a product of your choosing. This product must be marketable (people will want to buy it). Think of this as an Engineering Fair project, similar to a Science Fair project. You will work in teams of three (3) (we may have 1 or 2 teams that have more if we have to but teacher will make that decision). All research and paperwork must be in a 1” 3 ring binder and have all of the paperwork organized per the checklist and grading rubric. Product prototype must made out of 3-10 different types of material Prototype and display board must fit into a space no bigger than: – 3’-0” Wide, 1’-3” Deep, and 4’-0” High. 2 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Lesson Parts 1-4 Timeline Week 1 = Explanations; Team assignments, Team Contract typed up and signed by all and witnessed by your teacher; What Bugs me 10 and 5; Mind Maps Week 2 and 3 = Begin the design process and create the teams product “BLOG”ineering Design website (per rubric) and technical drawings of your product (per requirements given) Weeks 4 and 5 = Build prototype (you must bring in the materials to be used); create display board; 30 second marketing “Infomercial” video; sales flyer or brochure; PowerPoint or Prezi to use when presenting your product; and finish up the “BLOG”ineering design website ; present product to classmates Week 6 = if needed, but only for presentation because we need to be reviewing and prepping for final exam 3 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Grades: Teamwork Agreement Contract = “Major grade” What Bugs Me; Mind Map; and Engineering Design Plan handouts = “Daily grade” “BLOG”ineering Design website (per rubric) = “Major grade” Technical Drawings = “Major grade” – Multiviews with annotations for every part – Isometric of the assembled product – Exploded Assembly of the product – second animation of the product working Engineering Design (per rubric) = “Major grade” Built Prototype (per rubric) = “Major grade” Display Board (per rubric) = “Major grade” 4 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Grades (cont’d.): 30 second “Infomercial” about the product (per rubric) = “Major grade” Sales flyer or brochure = “Daily grade” Research Notebook (per check list) = “Major grade” PowerPoint or Prezi to be used when you present your product = “Major grade” Product Presentation (per rubric) = “Major grade” – 5 minutes to set up – 5 MINUMUM to 10 minutes MAX present your product (EVERYONE must speak at least once) 5 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Part 2 Timeline (2 weeks) Day 1-2 (3 if needed MAX) = Begin the design process Day 3-10 = Use a CAD program such as Inventor or Solidworks to create your prototype technical drawings electronically BEFORE you build it. You can change these as needed due to changes made when you build the prototype. This will be an ongoing project and won’t actually be completed until the very end and should be used in your final presentation. Day 3-10 = Start your team’s notebook and begin to create your team’s free “BLOG”ineering website per the rubrics given. This will be an ongoing project and won’t actually be completed until the very end and should be used in your final presentation. 6 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Pick one problem and complete The Engineering Design Process handout 7 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Start to create your “BLOG”ineering website You will need a Google account and Gmail for your team, NOT the individuals! You can create your website for free. I recommend Another good one is or you can “Google” other free providers and use them. I haven’t found any free provider that doesn’t require a Gmail account. 8 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Technical Drawings: (checklist) You must use a CAD program such as Inventor or Solidworks to create your prototype electronically BEFORE you build it. Technical drawings must have the following: – MAX size of paper for printing is 11’ x 17”, use letter 8.5” x 11’ if at all possible. – Isometric photo rendering of the prototype/product – Each part of the prototype/product multiviews with annotations – Exploded assembly of the prototype/product – second animation of the prototype/product working 10 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Time to get to work! Good luck and have fun with this unit and all of its projects! You can do this because it’s just a combination of all the knowledge skills you have learned to date. Refer back to this PPT and the handout or rubrics when you have questions about what is required. I will NOT answer any questions unless you ask three (3) other teams what it is you are supposed to do AND all four (4) of the teams ask me the same question at once. Your presentation grade will count as your practical part of the final for this class. 15 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.
