Welcome! Residential Construction 2201September, 2013Orientation, Safety and First Aid

We’ll be covering… Emergency evacuation proceduresLock-down ProceduresRosterIntroductionBinder and PencilLab expectationsCourse OutlineSafety Pledge Form

Emergency evacuation procedures At the sound of the emergency bell all persons in the lab should immediately stop what they are doing and exit swiftly and quietly through the double shop doors that lead directly to the outside, the first person holding it open for all others to evacuate. Persons in the vicinity of windows should ensure they are closed. Once outside the lab turn left and proceed to the stairway leading to the playing field waiting quietly in an orderly fashion for all to be accounted for. Note: In the event that the primary exit is unusable an alternate exit is through the Design Classroom, turn right and proceed to the exit at the end of the hallway. Once outside, the meeting place remains the same.

Lock-down In the event that a lock-down signal is given students will stop what they are doing, and swiftly move into the center area of the shop out of site of any windows or doors, where they will remain waiting further instructions.

Roster Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class and the administration will be notified of any discrepancies.

Roster Any student leaving the room for any reason other than in the event that the ALARM sounds must sign out, noting the time and reason for their leaving and the time when they return.

Introduction Your instructor for this course is Mr. Mike Broadbent and for those interested in spending more time in the shop or find yourself behind and would like to catch-up, the shop will be opened one day each week, Tuesday, starting when the time changes to standard time in the fall and will cease when the time converts to daylight savings time in the spring. We will be known as "The Craftsman Club". Plans are also in the making for Corner Brook Regional High to start a mountain bike trail-building club, and details will follow.

Binder and Pencil Always bring a pencil to class. Do not bring pens, markers or other indelible writing devices to the shop. You will require a 1” three ring binder to keep all of your handouts in. There is no one text for this course but there are many references that you will have to search out very often in order to complete the many assignments throughout the year. Any quizzes will come from your binder notes.

Lab Expectations Personal electronic devices such as cell phones, iPads and the like must be turned off and remain concealed during class time. If you choose not to do so the device may be confiscated.

Lab Expectations Remember: shop training is more closely related to job training than any other school subject. Shop training is designed to train students in the care and use of tools and machines and to help students form desirable work habits.

How you work and conduct yourself is called shop practice Tool Care: Use tools sensibly. It is important that hand and power tools be kept sharp, clean, properly adjusted and in good working order. Technique: Be as neat and accurate as you possibly can at your work. Avoid awkward and careless methods of work such as cluttered work benches. Effort: Only your best is good enough. Loafing and unnecessary conversation decreases shop efficiency.

How you work and conduct yourself is called shop practice Cooperation: Share tools and machines - Take your turn - Contribute to shop economy and avoid waste. Plan your cuts. Dependability: Be dependable in carrying out your assigned shop duties. Superintendent and Tool Pusher should check locker and bench tools carefully to report any discrepancies or errors in your work immediately. Safety: Keep in mind safe practices and rules. A healthy respect for any power tool is an absolute must. Remember; one power tool: one operator.

How you work and conduct yourself is called shop practice Deportment: Be attentive during lessons and other demonstrations. When your group is called come at once. Work quietly at your own job assignment. Horseplay, whistling and noisy conversation have no place in any workshop. Stay in your own work area. Be Resourceful: Learn to think for yourself. Follow instructions and avoid unnecessary questions.

How you work and conduct yourself is called shop practice Courtesy: Politeness and good manners go a long way in getting along with others. Do not butt in during lessons or individual instruction. Attitude: Make the best of every job and be as pleasant as possible about it because in life we must often do things we dislike.
