How did nuclear weapons related radioactive wastes end up at West Lake? 1942: The Manhattan Project and Mallinckrodt Wastes stored at the airport along Coldwater Creek Sold to for-profit corporation and moved to Latty Ave. 1973: Wastes moved from Latty Ave. to West Lake Landfill 1974: Radioactive sections of landfill closed. 1990: West Lake put on EPA National Priorities List 2008: EPA decided to leave radioactive wastes 2010: EPA reopened decision, which is ongoing 2010: Smoldering landfill fire started 2013: Attorney General sues Republic Services 2014: Attorney General request testing outside of the Landfill and of the Haul Roads. Jefferson City Trip to the Attorney General’s Office on May 6, 2014 AG takes two actions today on Bridgeton Landfill situation Jefferson City, Mo. – Attorney General Chris Koster today initiated two actions related to the Westlake Landfill site in Bridgeton, Missouri. First, Koster sent a letter to EPA Regional Administrator Karl Brooks calling on the EPA to test for radiological contamination in the community surrounding the Westlake Landfill, focusing specifically on routes used during the 1970s to haul radiological material from the Latty Avenue storage facility to Westlake. Second, Koster filed a motion in St. Louis County Circuit Court asking the court to set its pending lawsuit against Republic Services for trial.

Attorney General's News Release May 7, 2014 AG Koster releases statement on EPA plans for testing in Bridgeton Jefferson City, Mo. – Attorney General Chris Koster, who has pressed the EPA for weeks to conduct additional testing in the community surrounding the Westlake Landfill, offered the following statement today: "We are pleased that the EPA has agreed to test the Bridgeton Municipal Complex ballfields for radioactive contamination. When serious concerns regarding public health are raised, it is essential that government responds without delay."
