PRESENTATION BY LUSAKA CITY COUNCIL DURING THE LUSAKA WATER SUPPLY, SANITATION AND DRAINAGE PROJECT INNOVATORS FORUM DATE: 8 TH OCTOBER, 2014 VENUE:INTERCONTINENTAL HOTEL, LUSAKA PRESENTER:EDGAR C. MULWANDA

Presentation Outline 1.Who we are 2.SWM service provision 3.Challenges being faced in SWM 4.Opportunities available to innovators 5.What the LCC expects

LUSAKA CITY COUNCIL The Lusaka City Council is a local authority established under the provisions of the Local Government Act 281 of the Laws of Zambia. LCC has different functions according to the provisions of the laws. One of functions of the LCC is to provide solid waste management services to the residents of Lusaka.

1200 Twikatane Rd, off Addis Ababa Drive Reducing Poverty Through Economic Growth Solid Waste Management in Lusaka Lusaka has a population of about 2 million with per capita waste generation estimated at 0.5kg/day The LCC works with the private sector (Franchise Contractors and Community Based Enterprises) in providing SWM services to the residents of Lusaka.

Solid Waste Management in Lusaka LCC and its partners take the collected waste to Chunga landfill. Chunga landfill receives about 300 tons of waste everyday, leaving about 700 tons uncollected The uncollected waste is the one which is seen accumulating in different areas around the city including drainages.

Challenges in SWM Inadequate waste collection equipment resulting in waste accumulating in communities. Low levels of compliance from residents with regards to paying for SWM services Lack of adequate waste recycling facilities Inadequate equipment and uncontrolled waste picking at Chunga landfill

1200 Twikatane Rd, off Addis Ababa Drive Reducing Poverty Through Economic Growth Opportunities to innovators The LCC is looking for partnerships with the private sector at different levels of the waste stream i.e. Material recovery and recycling Awareness creation on waste issues Revenue collection innovations Landfill management

Purpose of partnership The LCC expects innovations in SWM to result in Clean living environment Healthy residents Employment opportunities Reduction in the cost of SWM services Value addition to SW

What LCC offers to the innovator The LCC undertakes to facilitate the availability of the required waste materials to the innovator. Provide necessary technical advice Enforce the available laws

1200 Twikatane Rd, off Addis Ababa Drive Reducing Poverty Through Economic Growth Conclusion Solid Waste Management is still a challenge for Lusaka City Council. Different opportunities are available for innovators to take advantage of and help reduce the burden on LCC while generating income for their businesses. We are positive that innovators will help with the SWM in Lusaka to ensure sustainable development.
