Methods-Week 6

SATIC Fill in numbers. Bring audiofile and paper to class. Be prepared to pay audiofile

5 E lesson You should have a draft up in 2 weeks. I will modify the syllabus. Make sure you tell Heather when you are going to be teaching.

Goals and Rational Your goals should focus on the student TeacherResearch Student Goals

Rationale drafts  In your groups – Each person should talk briefly about his/her rationale paper (what are you trying to convey?) 2-3 mins per person  The group can ask questions – 2-3 mins per person  Share what areas you would like feedback in – 1-2 mins per person  Each person in the group will have to give feedback on all of the papers next week.

Methods students were talking about their experiences in classrooms. Which student do you agree with most, and why? Sam: The students in my class don’t know anything. I have to teach everything from scratch. Sally: If I just tell the students what they need to know, they will learn it. Ralph: Students construct their ideas about science. It’s important to know what their ideas are and challenge them. Randi: Just tell me what to do.

Break

Driver & Chinn What does Driver have to say about student learning? What does this mean for the teacher? Or why do we have to consider students ideas? What are the important points made by Chinn about students’ ideas?

Keeley and Henriques What is important about these articles?

Task I want students to learn about adaptation Mechanism in evolution Variation in traits Differential reproduction- Some organisms do better than others Heredity So, if students can say a trait that is an advantage will be passed along to future generations– I will be happy

Traits are developed by individuals in response to the needs of the individual. Bishop & Anderson 1990, Clough & Wood- Robinson 1985 Traits are passed on by the bigger, stronger organisms that replace the smaller, weaker ones. Munson 1991 A species changes because the organisms use or fail to use particular body parts or abilities. Bishop & Anderson

How could you set up a 5E lesson on adaptation?
