Moving forward together, to better serve your business ©2009 GS1 19 Why do we need an IPP? GS1 Working Groups specify business requirements, process, and specifications. Many patents exist and are being filed today in areas relevant to those requirements and specifications. Companies could hold patents on aspects of the process that later deter implementation. It is GS1’s role to protect the GS1 community and its investment in development and implementation to the best of its ability.

Moving forward together, to better serve your business ©2009 GS1 20 How to address IP within GS1 1.Develop and administer an IP Policy (must opt in) 2.Update integrated standards development process to allow for sharing of work in progress only with companies that have opted in to the specific WGs (including GS1 MOs) 3.Only those that have signed the IP and Opt-In Agreements can participate in GS1 Work Groups (standards development).
