Guided Notes For Chapter 8 – 1 Changing Earth’s Surface Wearing Down and Building Up What processes wear down and build up Earth’s surface?

Erosion – The process by which natural forces move weathered rock from one place to another.

Sediment is the material moved by erosion Sediment is the material moved by erosion. Weathering and erosion produce sediment. .

Deposition – The area where sediment is laid or deposited Deposition – The area where sediment is laid or deposited. Deposition changes the shape of land.

Weathering, Erosion & Deposition act together to wear down and build up Earth’s surface.

Mass Movement – Gravity is the force pulling rocks and other materials downhill. Four types of Mass Movement: LANDSLIDES MUDSLIDES SLUMP CREEP

Landslide – (The most destructive) When rock and soil move quickly down a steep slope. El Salvador, 2001

Landslide

A Mudflow is the rapid downhill movement of a mixture of water (60%), rock and soil.

Slump refers to the sudden movement of one large mass of rock and soil.

SLUMP!

Creep is the very slow downhill movement of rock and soil.
