.\\ p r o j e c t Undertake design development of warehouse and office complex Select a 5x5m sectional area to develop in full detail Develop the construction technology relating to an internationally recognised architect

.\\ a r c h i t e c t N o r m a n F o s t e r Norman Foster’s philosophy of design essentially focuses on this; a large open space shared equally by everyone, free of subdivisions encouraging communication between the people within the space. Foster is also renowned for his common use of external bracing, expressing the structure, and extensively using the materials; steel, glass and concrete.

.\\ r e s e a r c h Framing system Pratt Truss Truss Pre-engineered Portal Frame

.\\ r e s e a r c h c o n t … Chosen Framing System: Standard Trussed Frame The standard trussed frame, commonly used by Normal Foster, is considered to be stiffer than that of a portal frame. Furthermore, it also allows for greater structural roof depth whilst also allowing for easier access to services within the roof.

.\\ r e s e a r c h c o n t … Vertical Bracing – Lateral Wall Support: Horizontal Bracing – Lateral Roof Support:

.\\ r e s e a r c h c o n t … Bracing System Chosen: Vertical Bracing Horizontal Bracing * The form of vertical bracing chosen is suitable for the warehouse given its large height, providing strong resistance against wind loads and good lateral stability. * The horizontal bracing chosen gives the roof structure extra stiffness, tying the trusses together providing lateral stability. * In both cases, bracing works within a 2400 x 2400mm grid

.\\ r e s e a r c h c o n t … Envelope systems Lower level: Precast concrete panels * The advantage of using precast concrete panels is that they are created off site in controlled conditions, ensuring a more accurate product and better finish. They can be pre ordered and transported to the site when the construction process is ready for them. They are created by placing reinforcement in casts, then concrete is poured and cured along with other processes to increase strength such as vibration to remove air pockets. Upper Level: Colorbond corrugated steel cladding * This material is arguably the most economical and readily available for use in industrial style buildings. It is lightweight, strong and easy to erect. Also, the Colorbond cladding adds the advantage of enabling a wider range of colours, to enhance aesthetic quality. It also has a long life and requires very low maintenance.

.\\ d e s i g n Structural system: Traditional Trussed frame with spacing 1200mm Bracing System: Cross-section type equal to span of columns Envelope System: Colorbond roofing and wall cladding, with precast concrete panels on lower part of building
