Why do we use punctuation? A woman without her man is nothing. A woman: without her, man is nothing.

More examples The man dropped the bullet in his mouth. The man dropped, the bullet in his mouth. Watch out – man eating apes! Watch out – man-eating apes! Commas When are they used? To separate items in a list: The sports shop sold clothing, footwear, rucksacks, equipment and books.

Commas When are they used? To separate out extra information: Fahim and Hasan, the owners of the shop, are selling their business.

Commas When are they used? To separate clauses (a clause is a main part of a sentence; each clause has a verb): Although Adam was fit, he couldn’t reach the summit.

Commas When are they used? To separate speech from narrative: “That woman”, said the hairdresser, “wants to dye her hair purple.”

Apostrophes When are they used? Omission – to show a letter is missing and two words have been joined together: I am I’m can notcan’t do notdon’t would notwon’t it isit’s

Apostrophes When are they used? Possession: to show that something belongs to someone or something. The player’s shirt (one player) The players’ shirts (more than one player) The children’s game The dog likes its ball

Inverted commas When are they used? To quote what someone has said or written: ‘Wow, that’s amazing!’ I said.

Inverted commas When are they used? To show that something is a title of a book, play, film, etc: I am reading ‘Brave New World’ by Aldous Huxley.

Inverted commas When are they used? To show that the word or phrase is slang: He thinks he’s a ‘dude’.
