The Concept of Creativity: Creating Possibilities All Rights Reserved No part of this document may be reproduced without written approval from Limkokwing University of Creative Technology Story of an Engineer George de Mestral, a Swiss engineer, on a summer’s day in 1941, took his dog for a walk in the mountains. When he came back he found his trousers covered with dozens of spiky seeds called cocklebur. Even his dog’s fur was covered with them.

The Concept of Creativity: Creating Possibilities All Rights Reserved No part of this document may be reproduced without written approval from Limkokwing University of Creative Technology Engaged in the task of removing these weeds he was intrigued to find out how they got stuck in the first place. Putting the seeds under a microscope he discovered that the spikes each had a hook that could cling stubbornly to things.

The Concept of Creativity: Creating Possibilities All Rights Reserved No part of this document may be reproduced without written approval from Limkokwing University of Creative Technology It was something that remained in his mind because it was not until 1952, some 10 years later that he made a serious attempt to translate this mechanism into a form of fastener. Today we know this method as Velcro a name coined by George Mestral. He joined two words – ‘Velvet’ and ‘Crochet’ to create Velcro. Crochet in French means ‘Hook’.

Woman Entrepreneurs All Rights Reserved No part of this document may be reproduced without written approval from Limkokwing University of Creative Technology Story of a Typist This is the story of Bette Graham. A single mother living in the United States in the 1940s. She worked as a secretary at a bank. In those days they used electric typewriters, not the computers that we use now. It was difficult to erase mistakes. This meant typing entire pages, even if the mistake was a small one.

Bette Graham - Woman Entrepreneur All Rights Reserved No part of this document may be reproduced without written approval from Limkokwing University of Creative Technology Our Bette was also a talented woman. She used her talent as an artist to earn some extra money at the bank painting advertising on windows of the bank she worked in. Bette discovered that she could paint over her mistakes on the window she worked on. She had a brainwave. She decided to experiment and applied this technique to correct mistakes in her typing. She did it secretly for five years. Her bosses did not like it and discouraged her from using this method. But her co-workers often borrowed her paint and brush to wipe out mistakes in their work.

Bette Graham - Woman Entrepreneur All Rights Reserved No part of this document may be reproduced without written approval from Limkokwing University of Creative Technology When demand picked up Bette worked with her son’s chemistry teacher to perfect a solution that would be smooth and thick enough to cover the mistakes. In 1956 she marketed her typewriter correction fluid under the brand name of “Mistake Out”. It was eventually changed to Liquid Paper. Bette sold her company to Gillette Corporation in 1979 for USD47 million.
