1 Our Mission Helping turn career dreams into reality TOPIC: Application processes in Higher Education Institutions A presentation to the National Congress & Annual General Meeting of the CEIA 24 – 26 October 2012

What does the application process entail?  Completing a form?  knowing how to complete the form?  knowing where to get a form?  knowing how and where to submit the form to?  knowing what happens after my form has been submitted? 2

If any of the foregoing, then… 3

If it is not just that, then… “What does it entail and when does the Applications process begin?” (Vygotsky’s Theory of Child Development)  The CAO sees the application process as a journey that starts at home, meanders along and has a number of milestones and Information Kiosks along the way.  For the majority of South Africans the journey is undertaken without a map or GPS. It is organisations such as the CEIA and CAO, and many others, to serve as the Information Kiosks along the way. 4

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?" "That depends a good deal on where you want to get to." "I don't much care where –" "Then it doesn't matter which way you go.”  Applicants with Physics and Math Lit980  Applicants with Accounts and Math Lit 3,679 5

Our Guidance Our interventions assist the learner in answering the questions:  I don’t know what to do / I haven’t made up my mind  What career options exist out there?  Which of these options are available to me?  Where do I get the necessary information about these career options?  What subjects must I have to pursue my dream?  What must my results be for me to be considered for entry?  Where can I pursue my dream?  How do I apply? 9

Vision To increase student numbers in Further Education and Training Colleges and the Higher Education institutions sector by providing quality career information that will contribute to human capital development for a meaningful role in society Turning career dreams into reality 19

Questions  Have we rigorously interrogated exactly what it means to provide career guidance  Are we doing enough to give our youth a fair chance of making an informed decision to choose a career path that will turn their career dream into reality.  Is this a debate worth pursuing?  How can we take this debate forward. 20
