Timeline For Indicators in the Virginia Tech Shooting-Seung Cho

INDICATORS FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH THE POTENTIAL TO COMMIT A VIOLENT CRIME #1 The documentation from an authority figure for the individual’s feeling of isolation and indifference of social norms. #2 Actions that show the need for an association with a radical group that is accepting of their social status or gives them a feeling of justification for their aggressive behavior #3 The violent writing that expresses a character committing a violent crime who they seem to identify with #4 Repeated documented aggressive behavior #5 Public statements on websites or in person of the condemnation of society that the individual does not relate with, or the feeling that society has wronged the individual in some way #6 Arrests or police acknowledgement of the individuals problems or aggressive behavior

INDICATORS # 7 Documented psychological diagnosis of a violent personality/mental illness that is a danger to themselves or others in society. This could entail a prescribed medication for this illness #8 The purchasing of a weapon to commit the crime. #9 The writing or profession of the desire to commit the crime

1984 Seung-Hui Cho is born in South Korea 1987 At three he was described as shy, frail, wary of physical contact, possibly autistic 1990 Cho was taunted through middle school and High school because of his sullen behavior and differences 1992 Cho and family left Seoul 1992 Family arrives in D.C

INDICATOR NUMBER 1 The documentation from an authority figure for the individual’s feeling of isolation and indifference of social norms Seung Hui was receiving counseling at the Center for Multi-cultural Human Services because he was shy, introverted, withdrawn and was diagnosed with "selective mutism"

INDICATOR #2 and #3 Actions that show the need for an association with a radical group that is accepting of their social status or gives them a feeling of justification for their aggressive behavior: The violent writing that expresses a character committing a violent crime who they seem to identify with: 1999 Columbine happened and Cho was in eighth grade. His teachers noticed that he began drawing and writing about menacing, and violent fantasies. Suicidal and homicidal ideations are identified and reported by Cho’s teachers because of this writing, Parents were informed

Documented psychological diagnosis of a violent personality/mental illness that is a danger to themselves or others in society. This could entail a prescribed medication for this illness2002 Received therapy during middle and high school: 2002 Diagnosed with severe anxiety disorder 2002 During Cho's junior year, professors reported of Cho's writing and classroom behavior was disturbing, and encouraged to seek counseling 2003 Cho becomes very quiet and withdrawn. His senior picture is not in the school yearbook at all Cho's mother turned to church for exorcism 2003 Presbyterian minister stated spiritual help was needed for him INDICATOR NUMBER #4

2003 Mental health officials worked with parents and Cho through sophomore and junior years but Cho discontinued 2004 Cho was attending Virginia Tech as an English major. He was known for his anonymity, it was his distinguishing feature; no eye contact, spent time alone on computer, watching TV or lifting weights2005 Cho seeks counseling from Cook's Counseling Center and is given a screening by phone, but he misses an appointment with Cook on December 12 at 2:00pm 2005 A female files a report with VTPD of "disturbing" Instant messages from Cho.

Repeated documented aggressive behavior Cho is prescribed minocycline because he complained about mites in the apartment but the doctor told him it was acne 2005 A book that Cho submitted to New York publishing house is rejected. He becomes more withdrawn 2005 Cho is kicked out of class after a couple of female students complain about him taking pictures under his desk with a phone, A second teacher complains about him to police Lucinda Roy department head tutors Cho privately. She states isolation is self-imposed. She made a police report about Cho, but was told that there were too many legal hurdles to intervene A female attending WAJ files a police report with Virginia Tech police telling them that Cho tried to contact her in person, through the internet and phone and was being very persistent INDICATOR #5

#6 and #7 Documented psychological diagnosis of a violent personality/mental illness that is a danger to themselves or others in society. This could entail a prescribed medication for this illness1999 Teacher suggested that his parents take him to get a psychiatric evaluation and counseling: 1999 Eighth grade, diagnosed with severe depression and selective mutism, a social anxiety inhibiting him from speaking 1999 Bullied for Speech issues 2000 Westfield High School opens and Cho is sent there 2000 Family did take him once a week for counseling and things looked like they were getting better. He was put on Paxil, an anti-depressant for one year 2002 Cho becomes an active member of the Science club at school INDICATOR #6

2005 After the female files the report and Cho is informed that he must stay away from her, he sends an IM to his suitemate telling him "I might as well kill myself now", the suitemate alerts the VTPD 2005 Cho is taken and admitted for an overnight stay and mental evaluation at the Carillion St. Albans Psychiatric hospital after being evaluated as “an imminent danger to self and others” by New River Valley Community Services 2005 A psychologist evaluates Cho and determines that he does not pose an imminent danger to himself 2005 Cho is re-evaluated and again determined that he is no danger to himself or others after he is triaged in person for a third time in 15 days 2005 Cho is accused of stalking two female students INDICATOR #7

2005 Investigation declared Cho mentally ill and ordered him to attend treatment 2005 English professor asked Cho to seek counseling 2005 Cho is declared mentally ill by Virginia special justice and ordered to seek outpatient treatment 2006 Fall semester Cho submits two screenplays and classmates protest to teacher because of the violence 2006 An English professor, another one of Cho’s writing professors alerts the Associate Dean of liberal Arts and Human Sciences about him and no information about his prior mental evaluations are found. They encourage him to seek counseling but he declines The two plays were posted on AOL after a staffer named Ian MacFarlane, a December 2006 graduate of Virginia Tech, brought them to his editors' attention INDICATOR #7

2006 A member of the Virginia Tech review panel revealed to Nightline that there were roommates who remembered Cho burning papers in his room and one of the papers was about a fictional character named Bud, with a storyline similar to what happened on April 16, February Cho buys a Glock 9mm pistol and March he buys a more powerful one March 13, 2007 Cho leaves a long disturbing note in dorm room, saying, "you made me do this" Suicide note-hated rich privileged kids2007April 18, 2007, NBC news received a package from Cho time-stamped between first and second shooting- contained a 1800 word manifesto photos and 27 digitally recorded videos which Cho likened himself to Jesus Christ.
