Section I Common Area Lighting

Common areas identified for provision of Energy Efficient Lighting are Corridor Staircase Toilets

Existing practice Provision of no. of 40 / 36 W Box type Fluorescent fitting according to the size of the common area. Proposed Provision of 1 no. 1 x 11 W CFL fitting Low cost Low energy consumption

Pay back period for the use of CFL fitting instead of conventional 1 x 40/36 W box type FL fitting CFL 1 x 11 W1 x 36W box type Lamp watts 1136 Ballast watts --8 Total Wattage 1144 Burning hours 12 Consumption per day 0.13 kwh0.53 kwh Cost of EB Rs 6/- per unit per year Rs Rs Savings per year Rs 867/- Capital invest.for replacement Rs 600/- Pay back 8 months

A case study for the O/o the CGMT, Anna Salai,Chennai – 2 Replacement by CFL Conventional 1 x 36W Fl lamp Total no. of fitting to be replaced in G+ 4 Floors 75 Available fitting 80 Capital Rs 600/- per fitting Rs Consumption per year in Kwh units Total energy savings per year in Kwh Total cost savings per year Rs Pay back period 8 months

A case study for the Tamilnadu Telecom Complex,Ethiraj Salai,Chennai - 6 Replacement by CFL Conventional 1 x 36W Fl lamp Total no. of fitting to be replaced in G+ 7 Floors 57 Available fitting 80 Capital Rs 600/- per fitting Rs Consumption per year in Kwh units Total energy savings per year in Kwh Total cost savings per year Rs Pay back period 5 months

Section II Solar water heaters

UTILISE THE NATURE SOLAR ENERGY CAN BE USED TO HEAT THE WATER SOLAR WATER HEATERS

A solar water heater  Collects solar energy through a collector  Store water in an insulated tank  Based on the collector system, solar water heaters can be of two types No.1 Solar water heaters based on Flat plate Collectors  Solar radiation is absorbed by flat plate collectors.  It consist of an insulated outer metallic box covered on the top with glass sheet.  Inside there are metallic absorber (selectively coated) sheets with built in channels or riser tubes to carry water.  The absorber absorbs the solar radiation and transfers the heat to the flowing water.

Flat plate Collectors

Evacuated Tube Collectors  Collector is made of double layer borosilicate glass tubes evacuated for providing insulation.  The outer wall of the inner tube is coated with selective absorbing material.  This helps absorption of solar radiation and transfers the heat to the water which flows through the inner tube.

Solar water heaters based on Evacuated Tube Collectors

Application  Solar water heaters of litres capacity are suited for Inspection quarters  Larger systems can be used in training centre hostel etc.  Hot water at C can be obtained.

A case study for the TE,Katpadi Heater used in IQ each 2 KW capacity 4 ( One per IQ) Heater is On from Morning 6.30AM to 8.30 AM and evening 7.00 PM to 9.00 PM I.e 4 Hrs Power consumption 4 Nos.x 4 hrs x 2000 watts 32 units /day Energy consumption / unit Rs 160/ day Capital investment for 500 ltrs SWH I/c all accessories RS pay back period = Capital cost/Energy consumption cost RS /160 =897 days PAY BACK PERIOD 2 years and 6 months

Solar water heating system practically requires NIL maintenance and life period is approximately 15 Years whereas water heaters require periodical maintenance of replacement of elements etc. and life period is approximately 7 years, which further reduces the payback period Savings after the pay back period / year is 365 x 160 = Rs 58400/-

A case study for the officers’ RGM TTC,Chennai (Already implemented) Heater in each room 1.5 KW capacity 25 ( One per room) Heater is On from Morning 6.00AM to 8.30 AM and evening 6.30 PM to 8.00 PM I.e 4 Hrs Power consumption 25 Nos.x 4 hrs x 1500 watts 150 units /day Energy consumption / unit Rs 975/day assuming that hostel occupied for 250 days in a year cost of energy Rs / year Capital investment for 2 nos.500 ltrs SWH I/c all accessories RS pay back period = Capital cost/Energy consumption cost 8 months

A case study for the officers’ RGM TTC,Chennai ( contd…) Above system was commissioned during July 2004 Savings to the BSNL achieved till date = 3 years – 8 months( pay back period) = 2 years 4 months x lakhs (savings per year) = 5.7 lakhs

Conclusion

SELF MOTIVATION Let us motivate ourselves to conserve energy by which BSNL can cut down expenditure on energy front. Let us follow the words of our great poet / economist THIRUVALLUVAR, which go as follows means, “ There is no problem in path of income being small, but expenditure should not be wide. ”

CONSERVATION It is possible when the mind turns towards ENERGY CONSERVATION and extend your hands to SWITCH OFF. We need Everybody’s co-operation to conserve energy which put ourselves in right path and our beloved BSNL too. Long live BSNL!!

THANK YOU M.Sreenivas Executive Engineer (E), Electrical Division-II, BSNL, Chennai
