Using Google Chrome ● Web browser - a software application that allows a user to find and review information on the Internet, including the Word Wide Web ( ● Google Chrome is one of several available and popular web browsers used. o Other examples: Internet Explorer, FireFox, Bing ● Chrome is a Google tool that can be transferred from one computer to another. o Log into Chrome using your personal information and your specific profile can be accessed (i.e.- bookmarks, browser settings)

Using Google Chrome (cont.) ● Users are not required to approve updated versions of the software; they are automatic. ● Omnibox - the place you can enter a URL (link) to search for a website. ● URL - uniform resource locater; website address ● Bookmarks - a way to tag a specific location of a web page for future navigation.

Google Chrome Interface ● Interface - the general display of a program for a user when it is launched. o Types of interfaces: command-line (MS-DOS), graphical user (iOS 8) ● Incognito window - allows a user to view websites, download files, or browse the web without recording the user’s activities. o Can be a good thing or a bad thing. ● Tab browsing - happens when web pages are displayed in different tabs rather in a new browser window.

Managing Bookmarks and History ● Google’s Bookmark Manager allows users to arrange and organize bookmarks into general or specific categories. o Bookmarks can be deleted, renamed, and sorted in the BM. ● Bookmarks can be imported from another browser or export Chrome bookmarks into an HTML file. ● Chrome also tracks your web history. o Details tracked: exact date and time, URL

Using Google Search ● Search engine - a program used to search the Internet for information o Ex: Google, Bing, Yahoo, AOL ● Google Search is the most widely used search engine in the world ● Keyword search - happens when a user enters text, a word or phrase to find files that contain the specified text.

Using Google Search (cont.) ● Google provides an alternative way to search the Web. o Using Google’s voice feature, a user can speak search terms (requires microphone) instead of having to use the keyboard.

Google Returned Results ● Google provides results once a user clicks the Search button. o Total number of results is shown followed by the list of results. ● Results can include links to websites, files, and images relevant to the search term. ● Snippet - a short description of the web page. ● Sponsored result - an advertisement, or returned result that has been paid for by a company to include

Search Tips and Tools ● Basic search tips: o use keywords o use a specific name, place or concept o use other keywords that convey key details o use keywords rather than sentences to produce better search results

Using Search Operators ● Boolean operator - a logical connector added to a search phrase to typically either narrow or broaden search results. o Ex: OR, NOT, AND ● Boolean operators requires users to be exact with regard to using all uppercase or lowercase letters. ● Punctuation and spacing can also make a difference.

Google Search Filters and Tools ● A search can be refined by using search filters, search tools, or an advanced search. ● Filter - limit a search to a specific criterion. o Ex: subject area, web page type, file type ● Google Search also has different types of filters. o Ex: images, videos, news, books, blogs, discussions, recipes, applications, shopping, flights, and patents. ● Google varies the filters it displays based on the original search term.

Google Search Filters and Tools (cont.) ● Quotes (“”) - searches for the exact phrase within the quotation marks ● Dash (-) - searches for results that do not include the word immediately following the operator. ● site: - searches only the specified website for the search term. ● Asterisk (*) - searches for keywords and adds a word or words in place of the operator.

Google Search Filters and Tools (cont.) ● number...number - searches for a number range. ● filetype: - searches for specified file extension containing the search term. ● OR - searches for one word or the other word per result. (Boolean operator) ● AND - searches for both words per result. (Boolean) ● NOT - searches for results that do not include the word immediately following the operator. (Boolean, similar to the dash operator)

Google Search Filters and Tools (cont.) ● Search tools allows users to guide returned results by adding time, location, and other requirements. o Ex: A user only wants to view results that have been posted since a specific time. ● Google provides an Advanced Search option that allows users to break down their search results even more. ● Google Quick Search Box - a program that searches the web and the user’s computer.
