ITGS: MUST KNOW TERMS NETWORK

Internet Global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide. Example: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Safari …

Intranet Private computer network that uses Internet Protocol technology to securely share any part of an organization’s information or network operating system within that organization. Advantages: -Workforce productivity (locating & viewing info.) -Communication -Immediate updates -Promote common corporate culture: Every user has the ability to view the same information within the Intranet. -Enhance collaboration -Cost-effective (Data shared via web-browser rather than physical documents) Kwangmyong (North Korean Intranet) –Government authorized persons are allowed to use it. –Main function: information censorship, preventing undesirable info. Being accessed.

Extranet Computer network that allows controlled access from the outside, for specific business or educational purposes. ‘Federal Express' Tracking System –By accessing FedEx's public site (fedex.com) and entering tracking number, customer is able to locate any package still in their system.

Virtual Private Network (VPN) Computer network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure such as the Internet to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization's network.

Routers A device that forwards data packets across computer networks. "traffic direction“ Must consider SECURITY –firewall, VPN …

Switches A computer network device that connects network segments. “Network Bridge” Switches: operate at many OSI( Open Systems Interconnection: way of dividing a communication system into smaller parts) layers: physical, data link, network or transport. (multilayer switch)

Hubs A device for connecting multiple twisted pair or fiber optic devices together and making them act as a single network segment. Works at layer 1(basic hardware transmission technologies of a network) of OSI model.
