What is FIRST? FIRST Stands for: For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology Founded by Dean Kamen in 1992 to spark interest in students in the fields of Science and Technology Three areas of FIRST include Lego League, Vex, and FIRST Robotics FIRST now has over 1,300 teams across the country and around the world Involves over 32,000 high-school-aged young people Has over 2,000 sponsoring companies

3 About Our Team  Our team is made up of students from Fresta Valley Christian School and several home school students.  The team was founded in the 2006 season by Brent Leppke whose farm we work at.  This year our team has 7 students and 6 adult mentors  6 team alumni came back to mentor our teams (when they could get away from their schoolwork)‏ 3

4  All our robots have been and will be built at the Leppke’s Farm- Lileemzo Farm.  We build in the corncrib.  We practice driving in the loft of the barn. Our Facilities

2006 Season Robot named the Musketeer We competed in the NASA/VCU Regional in Richmond, Virginia at the Siegel Center – Made it to the semi-finals – Won the Judges Award – Highest Rookie Seed – Won the Autodesk Inventor Rising Star Award

2007 Season Robot named the Challenger We competed at the NASA/VCU Regional in Richmond, Virginia. – Made it to the semi-finals – Won the Rockwell Automation and Innovation in Control Award for our control arm We competed at the FIRST National competition in Atlanta, Georgia. – Placed 52 nd out of 86 teams in Archimedes Division

About the 2008 Game FIRST Creates a different game every year and all teams are given six weeks to build their robot. This year’s game is called Overdrive 2 scoring periods (total of 2 minutes 15 seconds)‏ –Hybrid Mode (first 15 seconds)‏ Under programmed control and Robocoach control Robocoach can give the robot 4 preprogrammed commands –Teleoperated Mode Operator controlled with operator interface Earning Points –Earn points for maneuvering robot around the track –Hurdling or moving Trackballs

Riveteer Special Operations Riveteer is designed to compete in all aspects of the game –Removing the trackball from the overpass, driving fast, and hurdling the ball. Uses a Forklift with a compound lift and a pneumatic cylinder to lift the ball. The track on which this lift is located is slanted forward to give a horizontal force. It uses this system as well as the robot’s momentum to hurdle the ball in an upward and horizontal direction.

11 Riveteer Drive Train Uses a two wheel drive two wheel steering system –Rear high traction wheels –Front Omni-Wheels Allow the robot to turn with minimal friction and no skidding Four drive motors for quick acceleration and speed Low center of gravity 11

12 Riveteer Electrical/Controls The “brains of the robot” Two parts are robot controller and operator interface –Two people at operator interface Driver controls the speed and direction and the ball grabbing device. Shooter controls the signal to hurdle and the slow lift Uses a visible light system to give four commands during hybrid mode –5 million candle-power flashlights with different color gels –camera to sense colors

13 Richmond Regional Seeded tenth out of sixty-four teams at the end of the qualification matches Allied with first seeded team Lost in the final match in a two out of three shootout Won the Judges Award for our unique control system Brought home a silver metal for regional finalists
