A Culture of Cheaters Trinette Z. Monticeux-Monroe PHI 3670d 26 January 2008

Culture of Cheating: What is behind getting an “A”? It is an obvious observation that people have different reasons for choosing to cheat. I think that discovering what the ethical lines of dishonesty are will be the experimental factor for me.

Culture of Cheating: Internal Locus of Control One’s internal locus of control focuses on the outcome of taking a test, for example, is based on their ability to study well, maintain self control, and accepting responsibility for their grades earned. On the other hand one that exercises an external locus of control is subjecting themselves to a uncertain situation of success through cheating with the risk of getting caught. oc/LocusOfControlWhatIs.html oc/LocusOfControlWhatIs.html Internal: Studying to achieve academic excellence External: Gambling academic future with risky cheating behavior

Culture of Cheating: It’s More apparent than You may think! THE FACTS “Why Do Students Cheat?” by Eli H. Newberger, M.D. (6 December 2003)  “Who's Who Among American High School Students surveyed 3,210 "high achievers" in 1997”.  “86 % judged cheating to be "common" among their peers”.  “76% confessed they themselves had cheated”. Cheating is not a New Offense:  “Compare this figure to the results of a national sample of college students in the 1940s, only 20% of whom admitted to cheating in high school when questioned anonymously”.  “The students queried in 1997 ranked copying someone else's homework as the most frequently practiced form of cheating (65% of the cheaters); cheating on a quiz or test next most often (38%); consulting a published summary in lieu of reading the book, third (29%); and plagiarizing published work, fourth (15%)”. : Please reference this article featured on School For Champions’ website for more information : champions.com/character/newberger_cheating2.htm champions.com/character/newberger_cheating2.htm

Culture of Cheating: Real Answers from the students who cheat Survey comments: "I actually think cheating is good. A person who has an entirely honest life can't succeed these days." "We students know that the fact is we are almost completely judged on our grades. They are so important that we will sacrifice our own integrity to make a good impression." "I believe cheating is not wrong. People expect us to attend 7 classes a day, keep a 4.0 GPA, not go crazy and turn in all of our work the next day. What are we supposed to do, fail?" chers.ednews/04/05/highschool.che ating/ chers.ednews/04/05/highschool.che ating/ Survey: Many students say cheating's OK Confessed cheater: 'What's important is getting ahead' By Kathy Slobogin CNN Click on the picture to read article

Culture of Cheating: Example One In my first example, I was astonished to actually find a video of a young girl who exposed her secrets to cheating. Her name is “Summer”, and she has a track record of successfully cheating for the past ten years. There seems to be no remorse in her actions and she confidently posts her ideas for everyone to see on the World Wide Web. If she were to invest as much time studying as she does being a cheating seamstress, then she may even pass her classes with academic honesty instead. Culture of Cheating: Example Two This featured Canon commercial exhibits the media’s awareness of the act of academic cheating. The commercial depicts a rigid teacher examining each student as she walks up and down the aisles hoping to interject fear into the taboo act of cheating. Now, the teacher actually thinks that she has accomplished her intentions when she observes students sliding down in their chairs out of trepidation. What the teacher does not know is that the students have used the advertised Canon printer to write the formula for the test on the backs of their white shirts, and they were slumping in the chair to avoid her seeing their creations. Culture of Cheating: Example Three In the movie called “Cheaters”, the teacher (Jeff Daniels) at Steinmetz High is actually the one who influences the behavior of cheating in his students. He sells the dream of being successful as a result of cheating on the state exam. This movie appeals to the pride and ego that is involved in the act of cheating. This illustration shows that cheating is much more than its actions, but it is a real behavior attitudinal transformation that happens within an individual. I think that this example of cheating shows every fiber of what happens when one lies, cheats, and faced with its’ consequences. _Me2tfZKA _Me2tfZKA Click on the picture to play video clip Cheaters- Movie Trailer Click on the picture to play video clip Based on a TRUE STORY
